Car insurance with a telematics box

If your teens are taking their driving test – or you’re a learner yourself – then you’re probably researching car insurance and looking for ways to keep costs low. A telematics box is a great way to encourage safer driving, and enjoy cheaper car insurance as a reward

How do telematics boxes work?

Telematics boxes – also known as black boxes – are fitted to your car in order to collect data about your driving habits. They monitor your driving and allow insurers to calculate premiums that are tailored to you and your behaviour. This means that habitually safe drivers are rewarded and more ahem adventurous drivers are encouraged to slow it down a bit.

What do Mumsnetters think?

A survey of 1159 Mumsnet and Gransnet users with a child aged 17 – 24* found that

  • 27% of respondents worry that their child will speed or drive too fast when in the car alone. By way of contrast, only 3% of their children thought that this was a risk.
  • 98% of users surveyed said that price was a priority when choosing an insurance company, and 91% would look for special deals or offers for young drivers.
  • 1 in 5 survey participants said that they already have a black box fitted to their car and 25% stated that having a ‘black box’ fitted to keep an eye on speed and safety would make them feel more secure when their child was driving.
  • Parents did have some reservations about monitoring their child’s driving and felt that the invasion of privacy might be off-putting for young people.
  • Ultimately, 54% of parents surveyed were in favour of telematics boxes and 50% regarded them as “essential” for safe driving in young people.

My Policy Limited car insurance

If you think a telematics box might be the right choice for your family, it couldn't be simpler to have one installed by My Policy.

My Policy use Telematics Smart Boxes in order to reward safe drivers with cheaper car insurance. The device monitors how, where and when you drive and gives you a driver score based on your performance – the safer your driving, the higher your score (meaning any drivers in the family can get competitive). But, if you'd rather keep your score to yourself, that's fine too; the policyholder can choose who will access this data.

They will fit your device at a time that suits you within seven days of your policy starting, but you will be insured to drive as soon as your policy starts.

My Policy also factor how many miles you drive on average into your insurance quote, so if you don’t drive far you’ll pay less. Don’t worry if you go over, though, you can add a mileage top-up at any time.

You can track your driving on My Policy’s Online Driver Dashboard (app coming soon) and it will even give you pointers on how you can improve your driving. Provided that you drive safely, My Policy will knock money off your renewal costs and mileage top-ups as a reward.

If you’re 24 or under or don’t rack up many miles, you could save money with My Policy car insurance.

What is a telematics smart box?

It’s a small device in your car that collects data on how you drive. It’s the size of a phone, fitted out of sight. All new cars come with tracking options…so Telematics is quite normal

Want to know how it works?

It uses a GPS signal to send us your journey data. Our boxes check 3 things:

  1. Smoothness – take those corners carefully, save those brake pads
  2. Speed Control – stick to the speed limit
  3. Statistically the road are more dangerous at higher rated times, such as late at night so stay safe and avoid if you can

We use this data to create your personal driving score which you can monitor in your driver dashboard, safe in the knowledge that we keep all your data confidential. If your car is stolen, don’t worry we can help track it down. If you are in an accident we can use your driving data to help support your claim

We love smart box drivers…because they're safe we don't need impose curfews. There are over 750,000 live telematics based policies in the UK. That means there are almost a million safer drivers saving money on their policies. (source BIBA 2017).
