I've been pondering this name and keep coming back to it. What do you think of Euphemia, probably with nickname Effie?

usualsuspect · 25/05/2010 21:43

sounds like a brass band instrument

I like it - classic, feminine and not that common. Effie is a cute nickname.

LetThereBeRock · 25/05/2010 21:57

Horrid.

Horatia · 25/05/2010 21:59

Sounds too much like euphemistic and euphonium.

ZoopAZoopTroupe · 25/05/2010 21:59

Awful. Sounds like a disease that was possibly wiped out in the 19th century!

Taking granny chic too far.

Horatia · 25/05/2010 21:59

... and Effie is a bit like effing - sorry!!

JimmyTarbuck · 25/05/2010 22:03

Not keen at all

TiggyD · 25/05/2010 22:03

Isn't Euphemia the name for a collection of odds and ends? Why not pick a name that sounds like it could be a name? Effie is better.

catinthehat2 · 25/05/2010 22:09

That's ephemera

Horatia · 25/05/2010 22:10

How about Eugenia?

catinthehat2 · 25/05/2010 22:10

Euphemia = well spoken/fair of speech or near offer.

A bit Victorian & consumptive for my taste.

ravenAK · 25/05/2010 22:13

Due a revival!

Responses have been a bit more positive than I thought. I'm glad somebody picked up on Victorian too.
I wouldn't use Effie on its own.

I like Eugenia, but not keen on the emphasis on 'gen/jean'

My main concern was that few people would have heard of the name/ be able to spell it, and for those reasons could be a burden of a name?

ohemgee · 25/05/2010 22:50

The euphemia we know is nicknamed pheemie which I think is lovely.

swanandduck · 26/05/2010 10:53

Awful. Sounds like someone in a gloomy Dickens novel.

mopsyflopsy · 26/05/2010 11:56

I think it is beautiful and feminine, and Effie or Pheemie are cute nicknames. It is not that difficult to spell, is it?

minipie · 26/05/2010 12:02

Awful. Sorry. I think it's only even in consideration because of "granny chic" - in a few years once granny chic has passed, everyone will wonder why you saddled your DD with such an ugly name...

Hullygully · 26/05/2010 12:03

oom pah pah oom pah pah that's how it goes

mopsyflopsy · 26/05/2010 12:18

I don't even regard it as Granny Chic, I just think it sounds beautiful and elegant (and, no, I don't have a dd named Euphemia).

I don't think of it as 'granny chic' either. It hasn't been popular enough, if that makes sense?

Lauriefairycake · 26/05/2010 12:36

I know 3 Euphemia's and they are all Nigerian nurses - its a very popular name in Nigeria

Pasiphae · 26/05/2010 13:36

Not that keen, it sound a bit like a disease. It lacks finesse. But I love the nickname Effie!

DastardlyandSmugly · 26/05/2010 14:50

I love it and I love Effie.

swanandduck · 26/05/2010 15:45

I could actually imagine a nun, years ago, being called Sister Euphemia and scaring the life out of little school kids.
