Mina

Berlinlover · 19/06/2023 20:15

My mother’s name was Mena. I’ve never seen it spell Mina. Either way it’s a beautiful name.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/06/2023 20:16

Lovely

Purplemoon92 · 19/06/2023 20:17

It’s pretty but there are loads of names currently that sound similar Mia, Maya, Lena etc so it’ll likely blend in. Short names ending in a seem to very ‘in’. If you are looking for something more unusual I wouldn’t go for this personally.

Wilhelmina "Mina" Harker is the main female character in the novel Dracula.

tenbob · 19/06/2023 20:20

It’s the name of the doctor who delivered both of my DCs!

She joked both times that it would be a good name for a baby, but I had 2 boys
Maybe there are some parents that take her up on the suggestion?

EveSix · 19/06/2023 20:28

Nice literary reference in junior fiction; Mina is a character in the really wonderful book Skellig by David Almond.

Perhaps so and this is how I came across the name! But not me :)

AllPlayedOut · 19/06/2023 20:29

It's ok though I immediately think of Dracula.

MissHoollie · 19/06/2023 20:29

Very popular in Scotland maybe 80 years ago short for Wilhelmina .
Pronounced Mine - ah

thewillowbunnies · 19/06/2023 20:32

Makes me think of 'mean'

and also Eenie Meenie Miney Mo

Really not a great name. Who wants to be named Mean? Mean Mina. Because that's what will happen.

KirstenBlest · 19/06/2023 20:33

Meaner

HawdMeBack · 19/06/2023 20:40

Makes me think of Still Game 🤣

PickledScrump · 19/06/2023 20:43

I think it’s nice, not too common but not unheard of.

StillDre · 19/06/2023 20:43

I really like it. There is a Mina and an Amina at my DC school and neither get above comments like meaner or mean Mina.
They blend in with the names like Maya, Amira, Meera, Mila etc that are common at the moment, but also not one of the common ones so likely won't be known as Mina A or Mina B etc like the more common names are sometimes in a class with more than one.

Coronationstation · 19/06/2023 21:38

I quite like it. I know one through work, I think she originated from Germany (or Holland?). Lovely lady, the meaner thing has never occurred to me!

SkaneTos · 19/06/2023 21:40

Nice and uncommon name!

CafeNervosa · 19/06/2023 21:43

Meaner?

user1492757084 · 20/06/2023 06:03

Not a fave for me.

How about ..
Jasmina
Jazmin
Minerva
Hermione
Wilhelmina
Philomena
Mary - Minnie

WillyLows · 20/06/2023 07:08

What's the pronunciation? I think it's pretty but wouldn't know to say Minna, Meee-na or My-na. That might get annoying for Mina.

Wilhelmina nickname Mina?

I tend to say meaner as meen nuh and Mina as mee na although not a huge difference. Didn’t really occur to me though despite being familiar with the name

Namastaymyassathome · 20/06/2023 07:58

I would also assume Mine-a; I’m Scottish and have an elderly relative called Mina pronounced this way

LaBefana · 20/06/2023 08:02

@MissHoollie

Pronounced Mine - ah

I live close to a Mina Road, pronounced that way. Strangers to our district sometimes pronounce it to rhyme with dinner or cleaner.

Buttercupsdaisiesdandelions · 20/06/2023 11:45

Every Mina I've met (and I've met lots!) has been an old lady named Williamina. I'd be charmed to meet a young Mina, but I would assume it was short for something.

I'd pronounce it Mine-ah (Scottish)

Bookworm12345 · 20/06/2023 13:49

I know a beautifully elegant, Iranian lady with this name, suits her very well. She pronounces it Mee-na 😍

Seems to be quite an international name. Mina Sundwall the actress is a nice contemporary association I thought
