  • 1 onion sliced

  • 300ml milk

  • 1/2 lemon sliced

  • 600ml water

  • 225g long grain rice

  • 2 eggs hard boiled, chopped

  • 600ml fish stock or chicken stock

  • 1 bay leaves

  • 1 pinch cloves

  • 1 tsp cardamom

  • 1 coley or other sustainable sourced white fish. You can use smoked fish if your children like the taste.

  • 1 pinch turmeric

  • 1 broccoli chopped into florets, or green beans, or similar, broken or chopped quite small and steamed for 3-4 mins.


  1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas Mark 6.
  2. Sweat the butter, turmeric, clove and cardamom, stir in the rice and cook for 1 minute. Add the stock and bring to the boil. Cover and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes
  3. Place the water, milk, onion, bay leaves, pepper, lemon and bay leaf in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Poach the fish in this for 10 minutes or until done. Flake flesh from the skin.
  5. Gently mix the fish , optional eggs and broccoli florets in with rice.

Handy Hint

If you don't want to use the separate spices for the rice you could subsitute with half a tsp curry powder.
