Chocolate biscuits

  • 3 drops vanilla extract

  • 115g caster sugar

  • 1 pinch salt

  • 30g cocoa powder

  • 1 handful chocolate chips (any variety)

  • 115g plain flour

  • 60g butter


  1. Preheat oven to 190C/175C fan.
  2. Mix butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Sieve in flour, cocoa and salt.
  4. Mix and add in vanilla extract. You should end up with a dark cookie dough mix.
  5. Mix through chocolate chips.
  6. Divide into approx 8-12 balls (depending on how large you want your biscuits) and place, well spaced out, on a greased baking tray. Flatten slightly with a fork.
  7. Bake for about 12-15 minutes, again depending on the size of the biscuits.
  8. Remove from oven and leave to cool slightly. Then place on a wire rack to cool completely.

Handy Hint

Use a wet fork to flatten the biscuits - it won't stick to the dough.

    Disaster! Surely Mumsnet, you can correct the recipe as its known to be wrong? I didn't read the comments till too late, then added extra butter at the last minute, and they didn't solidify at all after 25 mins cooling time. Not impressed - waste of ingredients!

    Made this today (with sugar and butter quantities swapped). Really really delicious! I doubled the quantities and got 22 biscuits. Thanks for the recipe :)

    Doh! Didn't read comment about sugar and butter quantities being wrong way round! BUT result is totally scrummy and v chocolatey (added loads of chips). Would definitely make again. Thanks Jently!

    Ahem, got the butter and sugar quantities the wrong way round [blush] you want 2oz sugar to 4 oz butter - sorry!

    I sampled these today and they were DELICIOUS! I am going to give it a go, but am sure they wont be as nice as those that come from Jently's kitchen!

    Variations - Leave out the cocoa and add more flour for plain biscuits. Add chopped glace cherries and dessicated coconut to plain cookie mix Leave out choc chips and add diced glace ginger Add raisins that have been soaked in hot water for a few mins to plain biscuit mix
