Nan's ham soup

  • 100g self-raising flour (for the dumplings)

  • 1 large onion chopped

  • 1 large carrot chopped

  • 1 pinch seasoning (for the dumplings, to taste)

  • 1 small-medium smoked ham hock or smoked bacon joint

  • 50g suet (for the dumplings)

  • 1 ham stock cube (optional)

  • 1 tin pease pudding

  • 1 tin butter beans drained

  • 2 tins tomato soup


  1. Simmer the ham in some water on a low heat for 60 minutes or so, until tender. You could also do this overnight in the slow cooker.
  2. Add the carrot, onion and stock cube (if using) and simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. Add the drained butter beans, the tin of Pease Pudding and the tins of soup and stir.
  4. Make the dumplings by mixing the flour, suet and seasoning with five tablespoons of water. Divide into eight balls with floured hands and place on top of the soup.
  5. Put the lid on and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
