  • 140g butter

  • 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • 100g dark chocolate

  • 2 tbsp golden syrup

  • 50g cocoa powder

  • 175g golden caster sugar

  • 250ml natural yoghurt

  • 225g self-raising wholemeal flour

  • 2 eggs


  1. Beat butter & sugar in bowl until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs a bit at a time.
  3. Sieve cocoa, flour and bicarbonate into the bowl then tip in any bran left in sieve.
  4. Pour in natural yogurt.
  5. Stir everything to a smooth mixture and spoon into a greased and lined 18 x 28cm cake tin.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 180C fan/Gas Mark 4 until just firm.

Handy Hint

You can melt 100g of dark chocolate and mix with a couple of tablespoons of golden syrup and spread that over the cake and it will set.

    this is the best chocolate cake i have made, it stays lovely and moist for about a week if covered. my kids really enjoyed it
