  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 large onion peeled and sliced

  • 1 tsp pepper

  • 2 tsp paprika

  • 20-40 cloves garlic peeled but whole

  • 10-12 chicken thigh or drumsticks

  1. Place onion slices on the bottom of the slow cooker, then, in a large bowl, toss the chicken with the oil, salt, paprika, pepper and all of the garlic cloves.
  2. Put all of this into the slow cooker on top of the onion, and do not add water.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours (or on high for 4-6).
  4. Lovely served with mashed potatoes and green beans.

Handy Hint

Prepare everything the night before then just put in the slow cooker before heading out in the morning!

Two things. Doesn't the chicken look really anaemic when it comes out? And.... My slow cooker emphasises the need to cover everything in liquid. Do I have a different sort of show cooker to everyone else, or am I not living dangerously enough?

I don't have a slow cooker so cooked this in the oven at 150 degrees for 2.5 hours and it was really tasty. I used skinless thighs for convenience.

I cooked a whole chicken in my slow cooker without any liquid for 6-7 hours and it fell apart when I tried to lift it out so my question is, do the chicken pieces just fall to bits if it's cooked for 6-8 hours?

I did this for tonight's tea - I added a carrot, celery, mushrooms and a pepper to the onion at the bottom plus a couple of chopped garlic cloves & 4 whole cloves, ground black pepper & no salt. No water was needed. About 10 mins before serving I added some cream and let it simmer. I served it with rice. It was delish! We will be having it again!

Really delicious. Didn't need any liquid so don't worry about that. I think it could do with a extra onion or two though.

This sounds lovely, but no liquid?

  • sprout44 12/01/12 18:28

Could you just use regular skinless chicken breasts for this dish as we only like it.

Really easy, very tasty and didn't taste of slow cooker despite no prior cooking. A great hit with us all.

Really lovely. Although too much for my tiny 3.5 litre slow cooker, so did it in casserole in the oven. Excellent recipe support from Norma too!

Lovely garlicky, succulent, chicken dish that's lovely & simple to make & can be left to cook all day. Perfect for these chillier days.
