Simple sugar cookies

  • 1 tbsp icing sugar (to garnish)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 125g white sugar (Whitworths is easy to obtain)

  • 1 eggs

  • 235g plain flour

  • 125g butter


  1. Mix butter and sugar together until creamy.
  2. Add egg and vanilla extract to the bowl and mix again.
  3. In another bowl, stir the flour, baking powder and salt together.
  4. Add the flour mix bit by bit to the butter/sugar bowl and mix until smooth.
  5. Pat dough into a ball and wrap in cling film or waxed paper and put in freezer for 15 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180C.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until half as thick as your cookie cutters and cut out.
  8. Put biscuits on greased baking tray.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
  10. Allow to cool then decorate with icing and sprinkles.

Handy Hint

Get a large variety of cookie cutters as the children will love cutting out all sorts of shapes & decorating them.

    A simple & straight forward cookie recipe that even the youngest of children can enjoy making....although I wouldn't advise leaving an 18 month old in charge of the sprinkles tub, believe me!
