Tomato and apple chutney

  • 450g onion

  • 1350g tomato can use up green tomatoes if necessary

  • 450g soft brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp ground ginger

  • 1 tbsp mustard

  • 3 pints cider vinegar

  • 14g mustard seeds

  • 1 tbsp pickling spice in muslin bag

  • 340g sultanas

  • 1350g apples


  1. Peel and chop tomatoes, onions and apples.
  2. Add to the rest of the ingredients in a large pan and simmer for 2 hours.
  3. Spoon into kilner-type jars straight from the dishwasher. Keeps for three months.

Handy Hint

Pour boiling water over pricked tomatoes in a bowl and leave to stand for a minute to get the skin off.

    Can I also ask - how much chutney does this make, i.e., how many jars do I need. Info along these lines is rather useful!
