In need of a cheering film? Mumsnetters have scouted out some lesser-known gems, plus a smattering of classics, which are guaranteed to trigger a snigger

1. Music and Lyrics

Music and Lyrics

Like Hugh Grant? Like Hugh Grant in a frilly shirt? Like Hugh Grant in a frilly shirt dancing like your dad? Well then - you're in for a treat.

"Drew Barrymore is deeply annoying, but the 80s music video makes me snort with laughter."

2. Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore

An aspiring ice hockey player (Adam Sandler) transfers his unique talent for hitting small things very hard from the ice rink to the golf course. Alas, he struggles to hit the right note in terms of golf course etiquette, and a fierce battle to remain in the tournament ensues.

"I think I have conditioned myself to giggle snort every time the golf ball makes the awesome whizz sound."

3. Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz

The West Country Neighbourhood Watch Alliance is struggling to keep on top of crime in the rural village of Sandford, so naturally ex-London policeman Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) steps up to the plate. Contains a host of national treasures - oh, and a swan.

"Absolutely hysterical - and infinitely quotable."

4. She's the Man

She's the Man

This is basically Twelfth Night, but with modern dress, tampons and footballs. That's all you need to know.

"It's not too well-known, but it has Channing Tatum and Amanda Bynes in, and it's hilarious!"

5. Elf

So it's technically a Christmas film, but in truth, Elf brings tidings of comfort and joy whatever the season. Buddy (Will Ferrell) is one of life's innocents, and has been raised as one of Santa's elves; on discovering his true heritage, he leaves home to track down his biological father in New York City. Will warm the cockles of the hardest heart.

"Just thinking about it makes me weep with laughter."

6. The Court Jester

The Court Jester

Yes, it's looking a little fuzzy around the edges - but Danny Kaye's extensive portfolio of silly walks and even sillier facial expressions will distract you from the minor irritations of the pre-HD world. Kaye plays an ex-jester who becomes the unlikely leader of a band of rebels sworn to return the true-born infant king to the throne.

"It's a really old one but it's guaranteed to make me laugh."

7. Airplane

Oh you know, that one with the doomed-beyond-measure passenger flight and the inflatable co-pilot. Very possibly the funniest film ever. And yes, we're serious.

"Wish there were more comedy films like this."

8. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Will Ferrell plays (yup) an anchorman for a local TV station, who is struggling to adjust to having an effective, independent woman as his co-worker. Surprisingly amusing for a film about a sexist arse. Top line: "If you really want to pee you pants laughing, watch Anchorman."

9. Bad Grandpa

Bad Grampa

An appallingly-behaved pensioner (Johnny Knoxville) embarks on a road trip with his eight-year-old grandson. Created by the Jackass team, the plot is packed with outlandish pranks, stunts, and jokes - all in questionable taste. By turns hysterical and horrifying, your laughter will be of the guilty variety.

"I cried with laughter watching this."

10. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Movie Marmite. Some love it - and love to quote it at every available opportunity - while others look on aghast in blank-eyed horror. King Arthur (Graham Chapman) sets out on a quest to find the Holy Grail, but bugger the plot - it's the Monty Python gang's characteristic silliness that makes this film a must-see.

"My brother and I used to watch the Monty Python films over and over. I quote them far too frequently!"
