Feeling good at any age
We hope you enjoyed the Sunday night Feel Good Forum with Boots on Real and Smooth Radio. Our presenter (and mum of DS aged four) Kate Thornton was joined by professor of dermatology Dr Nick Lowe and psychologist Emma Kenny to answer your questions on feeling good at any age. It's a challenge we all face so, let's look in more depth at some of the main issues we discussed.
What causes ageing?
Some people aren't aware that UVA rays count for 95% of the sun's total UV rays (the other 5% is from UVB). UVA rays are the ones that penetrate the skin and can cause long-lasting damage and premature skin ageing.
Creams with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) mainly protect against UVB, which are the rays that burn. But UVA rays are present all year round and can travel through light cloud and even glass. This means that every day your skin is exposed to UV rays, both UVA and UVB, causing up to 90% of your skin's visible ageing.
When it comes to wrinkles there are products that can help and, thankfully, there are some basic rules.
Dr Nick Lowe explains: "Wrinkles are mainly due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which support tissue underneath the skin. The most common way to damage these is through repetitive sunlight exposure and smoking. The best thing you can do to reduce your chances of wrinkles is to use a daily broad-spectrum protective cream with a good SPF and proven UVA protection."
What you can do to give the appearance of younger looking skin?
Boots No7 day creams all have 5* UVA protection and SPF 15, so are great for everyday use. Dr Nick Lowe's The Secret is Out Lift & Repair Night Cream works during the night to help tone and firm your skin, the perfect way to get results while getting your beauty sleep.
To ensure your skin is in great shape, it's important to have a healthy and balanced diet. You can also consider using beauty supplements alongside your normal daily skincare routine, as these can help nourish your skin from the inside out. It's worth looking at Imedeen, which claims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is specially formulated to suit your age group.
For the delicate areas around the eyes, you should try No7 Lift & Luminate Eye Cream, which is the first eye cream with SPF 15 and 5* UVA protection.
No7 Youthful Eye Serum contains an effective fusion of Vitamin A, Cassava and anti-ageing peptides to work day by day to visibly reduce wrinkles, improve skin firmness and reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness in just four weeks.
Mike Bell, Boots Scientific Skincare Advisor, says: "As we get older, skin components such as collagen and fibrillen decline, leading to a reduction in skin strength, elasticity and volume. The skin around our eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on our face, meaning that it is more vulnerable to the physical signs of ageing than other parts of our body. The new No7 Youthful Eye Serum contains a fusion of anti-ageing ingredients to help restore these structural elements over time as well as soft focus spheres to instantly give the appearance of younger looking skin."
It's really important to understand your skin type, especially when it comes to getting the right products - surprisingly, 50% of women in the UK incorrectly diagnose their skin type. If you're concerned you've misdiagnosed your skin type, Boots have specially trained skincare advisors who can help you tailor your regime to your skin's specific needs. The anti-ageing wonder ingredients
All of Boots No7 anti-ageing skincare ranges contain an ingredient called Matrixyl 3000, which recently picked up some rave reviews in the Daily Mail.
Matrixyl (represented on packs as Palmitoyl oligopeptide and Palmitoyl tetrapeptide -7) almost doubles the body's production of collagen, so it's proven to keep skin looking plump and youthful. No7 Lift & Luminate Serum, Day and Night Cream, which is aimed at women 45+, helps fade uneven skin pigmentation, and contains our clinically proven No7 Protect & Perfect anti-ageing technology.
For an immediate temporary cosmetic effect, try Nanoblur Optical Skin Cream, which immediately reduces the look of lines, wrinkles, crow's feet, sagginess and enlarged pores.
With the wrinkles sorted, it's time to reduce the appearance of those darker patches of skin that dull your complexion. If this is something you've noticed, try specialist brightening products such as No7 Lift & Luminate Dark Spot Corrector (exclusive to Boots). It's brand new and has been developed specifically to target these brown spots.
Under-eye concealers, such as Garnier Skin Naturals BB cream Miracle Skin Perfector Eye Roll-on, help reduce the appearance of dark circles, with 'mineral pigments' which work to help smooth out the area under your eyes in one step.
And don't forget
It's vital you remember the importance of sunglasses that have UVA protection. The Orla Kiely range from Boots has a great range of styles, but as well as looking great you need to make sure you've got the full protection.
Carolyn Norman, Practice Manager at Boots Opticians, points you in the right direction: "You don't need to go for huge Victoria Beckham-style glasses as long as they have the symbol for UV protection on the side. Even on a cloudy day, 30%-40% of UV rays still penetrate and these are the cause of damage to your eyes and the skin around your eyes. That's why all Boots sunglasses come with 100% UV protection."
Along with the eyes, face, neck and chest, our hands are the area most at risk of visible signs of ageing. It's best to get a hand cream with built-in UV protection, such as Dr Nick Lowe Double Duty Hand Cream with SPF 15, to fend off the rays that cause our hands to show their age. Another great tip is to add a drop of cuticle oil to your hand cream for all-over hand protection.
And finally, there's a current trend for women turning grey and being proud of it, refusing to cover it up with colour. But for those who vow to keep their colour, it's important to find a natural shade that will cover all the grey. There are some great off-the-shelf dyes available at Boots that give 100% grey coverage: for brunettes, Garnier Olia in Brown 5.0, and for blondes, Clairol Nice 'n Easy Medium Ash Blonde 106 N Ea which give a complete, natural looking colour.
