Biff and Chip and... "cottaging"?
Think you know the Biff and Chip books inside out? Well take a closer look – you might be surprised at what some Twitter users have noticed going on in the background
If you're currently in the process of teaching your children to read, then you might well be reciting the adventures of Biff, Chip and Kipper in your sleep and having nightmares about Mrs May.
However, it looks like the long-suffering teacher might have been having nightmares of her own for decades thanks to the events that take place in Pond Dipping. Check this out:
In the scene, Wilma is playing by the river – but if you look closely at the background, you'll see three men vanishing into the bushes. Later, a woman arrives at the bushes and is so shocked by what she sees that her glasses fall off. The poor woman!
There's been plenty of debate this week about what might have been happening – but OUP, the series publisher, has sought to clear up the questions.
“We would like to reassure you that our books are created with the utmost thought and consideration. Our stories have been delighting children, parents, and teachers for over 30 years, and have taught millions of children to read here and around the world. We take the utmost care to ensure that our content is age appropriate and would not cause harm or offence to any child who reads our books.
“There are pages missing in the original tweet, which takes the images from Pond Dipping out of context."
What do you think? Innocent bush enthusiasts or something more questionable? Either way, we're going to need a diagram.
