The Porsche Boxster puts on a performance that's so dazzling you'll want to present it with flowers and pester it for an autograph every time you drive it. It drives almost flawlessly under any conditions: at low speed, it's so nimble it feels as though it could pirouette on the head of a pin; and at high speed, it's incredibly stable. It stops quickly, too, thanks to powerful anti-lock brakes. Paying extra for the optional Porsche Active Suspension Management makes the handling even sharper, but you won't be quite so comfortable. The car is also very quiet and, even on a motorway, you can whisper and still make yourself heard.
The Porsche Boxster is fairly roomy for a roadster, and it's easy to find a good driving position. Too many small buttons clutter the dash, however. The roof folds away in under 10 seconds and you can do it at speeds of up to 30mph. Folding the roof doesn't reduce luggage space, which is a bonus, and there are two compartments for your bags. We'd like a few more storage compartments around the cabin, however.
Standard kit isn't overly generous - you'll want to pay extra for Bluetooth and parking sensors which many future buyers will want.
The Boxster has set new standards for safety with head airbags that deploy from the door, in addition to the usual front and side airbags. Stability control is included, along with an alarm and deadlocks.
The Boxster is expensive and don't expect to get any dealer discounts. At least it should hold onto that value tightly. What you will get, however, is years of hassle-free motoring and only an average thirst for fuel. As with any soft-top, beware car thieves bearing Stanley knives and/or dogged determination - especially if you've spent extra on heated leather seats and sat-nav.
