  • Drive

Perfectly reasonable to drive, if not exciting, and very quiet

  • Inside

Rather like sitting in the library at a stately home, very luxurious

  • Safety

Airbags aplenty but no deadlocks, which is a security weakness

  • Reliability

We'd expect the fabulously crafted interior to be matched by mechanical toughness

  • Space

Lots of room for five, or seven if you go for the bigger version

  • Standard and extras

Leather, alloys, cruise and climate control come as standard

  • What's it like to drive?

It's a vast beast, with a large turning circle, but at least the variable power steering is light enough to make parking easy. The ride is very comfortable and it's so quiet in the cabin, even at motorway speeds you can hear your passengers think.

  • What's it like inside?

You could be settled in the library of your stately home, with comfortable leather seats, a superb view and plenty of space to stretch out in. Three will fit comfortably across the middle row, and the car comes with a seven-seat option, too, although the rearmost seats are rather cramped.

  • How reliable is it?

You'll be cocooned in a crash: front, side and curtain airbags are standard. It's a Toyota so should be very reliable; there's a five-year warranty for extra peace of mind.

  • Should I buy one?

The Land Cruiser V8 is expensive to buy and run, and if if it's a company car the tax bill will be hefty. Masses of kit comes as standard, from cruise control and electric leather seats to alloy wheels and a CD multichanger.
