Peugeot 5008, 59-reg to 60-reg

Peugeot 5008 exterior

Why it's a great used buy

The Peugeot 5008 is practical, stylish and good to drive, with lots of family-friendly features fitted to most models. Although the rosta of trim-levels and engines has been updated a few times since the 5008 was launched in late 2009, the car itself hasn't yet been revised so used examples are still up to date in most ways. This means their prices are still relatively high but, due to Peugeot cars' relatively heavy depreciation, earlier examples can be found for under £10,000.

What it's like to drive and use

Most versions of the 5008 come with family-focussed extras including a mirror for the driver to see what the kids are up to in the back, extra storage areas hidden under the rear footwells and aicarft-style fold-down tables on the back of the front seats. The rearmost pair of seats pop up easily from under the boot floor, but their smaller size and limited legroom means they're best for children or for smaller adults on an occasional basis. The three middle-row seats each individually slide and recline to help everyone get comfortable, or to adjust the allocation of space between the boot and the middle-row passengers. Folding any of the seats is quick and easy, allowing you to transform the 5008 into a van in under a minute. The boot is huge when five are on board, and it can still take a slim-folding pushchair when the back seats are in use.

The Peugeot 5008 is generally smooth and quiet on the road. Its suspension is firmer than that of its cousin, the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, but while you might notice the odd bump on poor surfaces, this also means its body stays more upright on bends than the Citroen's. It changes direction neatly, too, and feels solidly planted on the road.

Our pick

1.6 HDi 110 Active
Typical price £9934 for '10/10 with 42,000 miles
This 113bhp 1.6 diesel engine will be powerful enough for most families' needs. Active was the 5008's entry-level trim when models of this age were brand new but it still included all the family-orientated fixtures and fittings, plus air-con, electric front windows and a radio/CD-player.
1.6 VTi 120 Active
Typical price £8997 for '10/10 with 42,000 miles
You won't be breaking any speed records with this engine but if your car journeys are mainly round town than this probably won't bother you. It's also a good deal cheaper than the turbocharged THP 1.6 petrol, which means you can buy a much younger car. Active trim brings everything you'll need, plus some family-friendly extras.

Problems to watch out for
A few owners have complained about leaking rear tailgates, so check for any signs of damp or water damage in the boot. Rear wipers that stop working have also been reported. The 5008's interior isn't especially hardwearing – look out for fading fabrics or loose parts.
