About the book
The Power is the much anticipated fourth novel from Naomi Alderman. Described by the author as 'feminist science fiction', it is set in a dystopian world where young women find they have the power to inflict pain – to varying degrees, from a mild tingle to death – with a simple flick of the wrist. Suddenly, women turn on their life-long male oppressors, resulting in a complete reversal of power the world over. Armies become female, religions begin to worship female idols, men avoid women in the street. While dumbfounded men wait for a 'cure' to be discovered so that the 'normal' power can be restored, women relish in their newfound existence.
This spellbinding novel questions the role of gender and our expectations of violence, forcing the reader to think about everyday sexism and the world we live in now. It is also an exciting and pacy thriller, with heart-stopping scenes that will keep you up at night and stay with you well into the next morning.
