For the slightly nervous...

Chu's First Day at School by Neil Gaiman and Adam Rex

Chu is not sure what he's best at or how he'll fit in with his classmates - but everyone has a talent, and very soon Chu will discover his. A lovely story to read aloud with a funny little ending that will help dispel first day nerves.

Ruby's School Walk by Kathryn White

Kathryn White captures that "yucky nervous feeling in your tummy" perfectly in this story about Ruby's walk to school. Colourful illustrations and Ruby's special map make this an inviting read, great for apprehensive school starters.

For the curious...

Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg

"I'd really recommend Janet and Allan Ahlberg's book 'Starting School' - it has loads of the loveliest detailed little pictures and is very informative for young children about lots of different aspects of school life."

Come to School Too, Blue Kangaroo! by Emma Chichester Clark

The Blue Kangaroo books are a firm favourite among Mumsnetters, and this one is no exception. Sensitive and reassuring, its characters Lily and Blue Kangaroo demonstrate just how much fun there is to be had in the classroom - perfect for those who are having a bit of a wobble.

For the downright stubborn...

I Am Absolutely Too Small for School by Lauren Child

Big brother Charlie reassures Lola when she claims her invisible friend is too nervous to go to school. "10 out of 10 - my four-year-old daughter loves this book. It was the perfect preparation for reception as it covered many of the normal fears about starting school. A huge hit!"

Whiffy Wilson thinks school is boring - he'd rather sit at home and watch TV all day. Will he be persuaded to give it a try? A delightful rhyming story filled with charming characters, sure to be enjoyed time and time again.

For the ones who want to get stuck in...
