Non-fiction Book of the Month: Quiet Power by Susan Cain

Quiet Power book cover

Following the success of her first book, Quiet, which demonstrated the strengths of quietness to the wider world, Susan Cain's latest book talks specifically to younger readers and their parents.

About the book

Growing up, as most of us remember, can be a pretty tough time and if you happen to be one of the third of the nation who is growing up as an introvert then the whole process can seem even tougher. The world is a loud place, and as a quiet or shy teen, it's easy to feel like a failure in a world where the emphasis is on putting yourself out there, getting your voice heard, going out, making friends and having (loud) fun. Quiet Power points out the qualities of introversion and encourages children, teenagers, and – just as importantly – their parents, to see that embracing who they are will lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

The book is divided into four sections – School, Socialising, Hobbies, and Home – through which Cain guides the reader, and along the way, delightfully demonstrates the power and strength in a reluctance to be loud. She covers everything from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) to the benefits of online gaming and the safety of headphones, all written clearly in a tone that is non-patronising, empowering and easy to read.

Quiet Power is full of acceptance – for both introverts and extroverts – and clear, reassuring advice based on real personal experiences of young people. It's a book that ought to be read by quiet young people, parents, and teachers alike, and one that has the power to change the way new generations of young introverts grow up.
