Book of the Month: Little Fires Everywhere

the awkward age

Celeste Ng's latest novel explores love, politics, race, coming of age and what it really means to be a mother

About the book

A house on fire in Shaker Heights leaves the community of a sedate suburb in Cleveland reeling as it discovers that the cause was an act of arson by Izzy, the rebel child of the well-heeled and respected Richardson family.

Little Fires Everywhere investigates how the Richardsons and those around them reached this point, from the event of new arrivals in Shaker Heights – Mia Warren, an enigmatic artist and single mother to teenager Pearl – to their sudden departure. How can the collision of these two very different families prompt such devastating results?

The novel explores issues of race, class and social dynamics alongside the implications of family secrets, growing up and growing old and the true meaning of motherhood.

“Sometimes I find books that are too focused on the solving of a mystery make me rush. However, the way Celeste Ng unfurls the plot and the characters made me want to really get to know them all, and be carried along with their stories.”
