Noah is four and wants to go home. The only trouble is he's already there. Janie's son is her world, and it breaks her heart that he has nightmares, that he's terrified of water, that he sometimes pushes her away and screams that he wants his real mother, that it's getting worse and worse and no one seems to be able to help.

In desperation, she turns to someone who might have an answer - but it may not be one she's ready to hear.

The Forgetting Time is the astonishing debut novel from New York-based documentary-maker Sharon Guskin. It tells the story of Noah, a four year old who seems to remember the life of another boy: a boy from a completely different part of America. A boy who is missing.

As Noah's behaviour – and his distress – worsens, Janie seeks help. But a series of specialists can't reveal any answers, and eventually, much to her dismay, they suggest she medicate the problem away with strong antipsychotic drugs.

Then she meets Dr. Anderson, a psychiatrist who has been shunned by his profession for his ongoing research into people who claim they remember their past lives – and who can prove it. With his help, could there be a way out for Noah? And if there is, might it mean losing him forever?

Read an extract

The novel is punctuated with extracts from a Life Before Life, a real non-fiction book which collects a clutch of convincing case studies – people from all over the world who purport to remember lives they have lived before, giving an extra, fascinating element to a book whose story and writing already render it completely compelling.

Already compared to The Lovely Bones by InStyle and Cosmopolitan, this amazing debut is certainly one you won’t forget in a hurry.

About the author:

Sharon Guskin has degrees from Yale University and the Columbia University School of the Arts, and has worked as a writer and producer of prize-winning documentary films.

She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and two sons. The Forgetting Time is her first novel.
