And the Mountains Echoed: May book of the month
Over the last ten years, Khaled Hosseini has become the master of the Literary Blockbuster. The Kite Runner was nominated as the Book of the Decade; A Thousand Splendid Suns became Richard & Judy's Best Read of the Year. Our May Book of the Month is Hosseini's third novel, AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED, and it is as bitter-sweet, poignant and tear-jerking as you'd expect.
Covering three generations and multiple viewpoints from 1952 to present day, the novel is primarily about an Afghan brother and sister who are abruptly separated when their father decides to give one of them away. The story goes on to expand the theme of families, love and loss with a host of diverse characters, from a Greek plastic surgeon to a warlord's son, all giving a different perspective and all connected to each other by the ripple effect of one man's difficult decision.
The chapters set in Afghanistan are cleverly criss-crossed with historical reference, with deep insight into the soul of this traumatised country. As always, Hosseini blends destruction with beauty, despair with hope. He expertly manipulates emotions while driving the story forward with drama and surprise. As the Daily Telegraph put it, "Hosseini pulls off his usual - impressive - trick of breaking your heart and leaving you smiling".
