February Book of the Month

The Gathering wasn't exactly everyone's cup of cocoa...but every cloud has a silver lining. We happened to find this rather brilliant thread, started by DarrellRivers, who couldn't stand Anne Enright's Booker Prize winner and wanted to read a time-tested classic instead. A torrent of excellent recommendations (not to mention heated discussions) ensued, inspiring us to do a Classics month and to take our lead from the well-read bookworms who responded to the plea for help.

I've taken some of the 'most mentioned' novels from the thread, ten books in all, and compiled a Mumsnetter Favourite Classics list. Now all you have to do is pick the one you think should be our February Book of the Month....

(You'll notice there's no plot outline (for reasons of space) plus author pics have replaced covers (for reasons of technology and for the fun of seeing all those beardy Victorians). If you click on the author picture, it'll take you to the cheapest new paperback available, usually Wordsworth Classics, a total steal at £1.99 a pop but there are even cheaper second hand ones going. Or like me, you might finally dust off a copy from your bookshelf where it has been silently chastising you for a decade or so.)
