Top 10 birthday gift ideas for babies

Want a truly great gift to celebrate baby's first birthday, or any other special occasion? We've collected some Mumsnetter faves that both little one AND parent will love

1. Lamaze Freddie the Firefly, £10

Doomsday scenario: child loses favourite toy. Freddie the Firefly has lots of flappy bits to keep babies happy, and can attach to almost anything, so you can relax <phew>.

"My son has had this for about two months now and it is still his favourite toy. It's soft enough to leave him playing with, has lots of noises and textures to keep him occupied, and can be attached to bouncers, prams and car seats."

2. Fisher-Price Noah's Ark, £39

Perfect for sparking stories and play scenarios, this sturdy, animal-packed Ark should capture the imaginations of babies and beyond.

"I bought this for my daughter's first birthday and she has loved it ever since. She still plays with it now, aged three (she used to take the giraffe and zebras with her everywhere!)"

3. Galt Wooden Pop-up Pegs, £7.95

This trad toy is brilliant for hand-eye coordination and colour recognition - and creates satisfying squeals every time the little people pop up.

"This was a first birthday present for my oldest daughter, who mastered putting the pegs in really quickly and loved firing them out and then matching the colours to the holes. I just got it out again for my youngest who also loves it. A simple toy that has provided hours of entertainment."

4. Manhattan toy Whoozit, £9.93

This pocket-sized Whoozit is an all-round entertainer for younger babies - lots of bits to grab, and different shapes and textures to keep them engaged. Plus, it squeaks!

"This has been great. I bought it when I had my first child five years ago and it's still going strong for my third wee monkey. It has survived being chewed, bashed around, and has remained a firm favourite in our family."

5. Tiny Love Symphony-in-motion mobile, £34.95

Easy on the eye AND melodic, this cot-top mobile converts into a music box and night light for when they're a bit older.

"One of the best things we bought for our baby!"

6. Lamaze Captain Calamari, £7.99

What's not to love about Captain Calamari, the soft octopus toy? Take him with you wherever you go to keep damp eyes - and rising storms - at bay.

"Basically, the only toy your baby will need. It crinkles, it clacks, it reflects, it combines a heap of different textures and colours - and it's an octopus, called Captain Calamari. Brilliant."

7. Manhattan toy Skwish, from £12.49

Like a stress ball for babies! Boings back into shape every time, with satisfyingly stretchy elastic and nobbly bits to distract teething little ones.

"I used to call this the 'calming down toy' because as soon as it was produced it had that effect. Such a simple idea but perfect for babies - and even some grown-ups who need to relax..."

8. V-Tech First Steps baby walker, £24.99

Perfect for supporting wobbly first steps, and jolly useful for pre-walkers too, with lots of noise-making bits and bobs to press and turn (plus an endlessly fascinating phone handset).

"A fantastic acquisition - our daughter has happily played with this for past six/seven months and still happily marches around with it now at 16 months. She likes the phone, the noises, lights and tunes. I would recommend it to anyone."

9. Sophie the Giraffe, £12.95

A traditional French bendy toy which reliably soothes teething grouchiness. NO IDEA why it should be in the shape of a giraffe - but it is, and it works, so we're enquiring no further.

"Sophie is marvellous! A big hit with my daughter while she's been teething. It was given to us as a gift and as soon as I saw her I remembered her, I had my own Sophie when I was young - she even smelled the same!"

10. Tomy Lullaby Dream show, £22.49

Just stimulating enough to distract a sleepy baby while you make your exit. You're most welcome.

"We put it on for 20 mins when he's having a feed, before bed, and then once we've left the room. He loves watching it and is really chilled out and distracted. It's really helped to establish a stress-free bedtime. Also works when changing nappies."
