Body 1
First baby on the way? No need to go mad in the shops - just grab the stuff you really need:
  • Baby wipes and cotton wool
  • Nappies
  • Changing mat
  • Baby-gros
  • Sleep suit
  • Vests
  • Blankets
  • Muslin squares or flannels
  • Nursing bra
  • Breast pads
  • Maternity pads
  • Breast pump/bottle and sterilisers
  • Pushchair
  • Cot or crib
  • Car seat
  • Sling
  • Bouncy chair
  • Baby gym/nest
You'll use this lot rarely, if at all, so buy only if you can't bear not to:
  • Top'n'tail bowl - honestly, for a quick between-baths wash, any container you already have in the house will do just fine
  • Baby bath - pop them in the basin, or use a bath seat in the bath instead
  • Brush and comb set - full head of hair or as bald as a coot, baby styling won't be high on your priority list
  • Baby food maker - the adult-sized version will do the job just fine
  • Baby wipe warmer - a baby bum won't freeze with an unwarmed wipe, we promise

Quote 1
You always feel like you MUST get everything before the baby arrives, but I wish I'd waited, because lots of stuff I got was completely unused.

Quote 2
When picking a pushchair or pram, think about your lifestyle. We don't have a car and I walk everywhere, so I wanted a manoeuvrable, light pushchair, and I tried pushing a few about in shops. When I liked the feel of one, I watched eBay and pounced!

Quote 3
The most unnecessary item I bought was a top'n'tail bowl - it's huge and chunky and I've not used it once - I've been using a small take-away container instead.

Check out Mumsnet Reviews for tips on the products parents who've been there and done that love.

Do bear in mind, however, that if there was ever a time to get thrifty and start buying pre-loved, this is it. Mumsnetters report having bought everything, bar their cot mattress and car seats, second-hand.
May be left blank, if body is long and there is a natural break to have quotes appear use this secondary body. Do not embed images in the body
