How do you know if hip muscle pain is good or bad??? .

I'm doing some yoga at the moment and my left hip muscles are hurting in a way that feels like water draining through the them and it's like internal stinging nettles..
I can't work out if it's positive pain or not, it's around the back of my leg wrapping to the outside buttock, and at the back of my iliac crest.. and a bit like gnawing. I want to do more yoga tomorrow morning and can't decide if i want more deep stretches in that area or if i should hold off..
How do you know???

Hmm.. even the doctor wasn't sure, but i am more confident that 80% is positive

Sounds like a sciatic nerve issue. I get that sort of pain in yoga sometimes (well, outside of yoga too) and wouldn't call it positive.

If there is 'positive' pain I'd say it's the stretching sensation you get in some poses. The kind that 'hurts so good' as I read recently in a yoga article! Anything that involves stinging, gnawing, wrapping pain is not great news IMO.

Thanks... I had a pain one day that was like a hot rod down the middle of my leg , which sounds definitely like the sciatic nerve.. but again it felt 'positive' and not unnerving or problematic...it felt 'better' than the pains I mention above..

I read some articles about nerve healing after impingement, and that talked about a full, flooding hot pain, so I'm kind of confused as to whether it is pain that I couldn't feel before, but can now..sort of like blood returning into cold hands and feet... uncomfortable but for a positive reason...
Or if it's signs of nerve damage and irritation...

My inflammation scores on bloods were a little up but not in a way doc was concerned... Arch it's annoying not knowing if I should be worried or relieved...

It doesn't sound like "good" pain, sorry.

In your place, I would rest for at least a week and see if that helps.

But you have been continuing with your yoga practice? That is the impression I get from your OP.

I'm saying you should rest and not stretch or do other yoga at all for a week and see if it feels better. Good luck. I know it's horrible to be benched when you are in top form.

I can't see how any kind of hip pain is good, pain is warning that something is wrong. Definitely rest up until it is gone, and if it has been going g on for over a week go back your GP because it sounds like there is a problem.

Three years! Shock Definitely not good pain, then.

It could be tendinopathy or hip impingement, for example. There are treatments for many of these conditions, but you first need to get a diagnosis. Please get referred to a specialist, have ultrasound & MRI to see exactly what is going on in there.

Thanks all, just read my posts and realise it's not helpful! So for three years I've had some sort of back/hip issue, osteopathy took it away from back into hip, which is sort of good news, but the hip aspect is more 'present' if you see what I mean..it doesn't keep me awake any more, as it used to, but does make me wake early and/or take longer getting to sleep and I rarely get 'bliss' sleep. I've recently been doing yoga a lot and it seems to both help and exacerbate.. so that's why i"'m struggling to understand it... The pain can get 'bigger' in terms of involve a wider area/seem physically more 'chewy,' but rarely goes away. The 'hot' rod'/feels positive/gnawing pain is the most recent one that's giving me both feelings of release but also a much more burning 'nervy' type pain.

As I type now it feels like someone is pinching me to a bruise internally, and also a bit like something is gnawing around the back left base of my buttocks (not as nice as it sounds!)

It gets a lot worse on sitting for long periods and yet my instinct is that yoga is better to continue with than not.

Is it possible that the 'hot' rod' pain might be positive say from release/increased blood to nerves?

I'm really really longing for good sleep and to not feel chronic pain, so would welcome any stories of recovery!.

Thanks for the bursitis link. I'll start reading around that too...

I'm not a medically trained, as far as I know no one who had posted on this thread is, if the pain has been going on for so long you need to go back to your GP and push for further investigation. And in the meantime, don't do yoga or any other form of exercise, you might be exacerbating the problem. Are you doing a yoga class or doing it alone?

I think this too.

If you want to carry on with yoga, I'd suggest talking to a good teacher. They might be able to suggest things you can do that won't exacerbate, or they might say you should rest totally.

Hello all, thanks. I have been continuing with yoga, and actually am kind of immobile today because if it..but in a good, recovery sort of way. I went twice yesterday too. The pain in my hip makes my whole body tense and yoga helps this, so it's a trade-off.

I realised over the last three sessions that there are a few points of imbalance and a feeling of one or two muscles around my hip and top of thighs that feel so short they pull in even small movements that don't pull in the other hip. I am certain it's sitting thats the problem.

I haven't had the 'hot' rod' feeling but do have a feeling of tearing and tightness that hits the top left of my thigh, but also feels like its at the edge of my glutes (the same pain?) Is there a muscle or tendon that goes to both these places?

After a session.. especially Ashtanga, I feel like the release is better than the pain iyswim.
Doc. Is stumped but am getting an x-ray.

I am yogaing on Monday too, a mix of styles, which is more stretchy and less energetic, the rest of my body feels amazing!!..
