Favourite and least favourite poses?

My yoga teacher said that it's usually the poses that we dislike that are the ones we need the most Grin

My favourite poses are -
Love sun salutations
Love warrier sequences
Dancers pose
Goddess/butterfly
I used to dislike Dolphin and fish poses but have enjoyed seeing my progress with them and the challenge as continue to push and breath through them Smile

My least favourite are -
Anything involving hamstrings, mine are so tight I really struggle with them
Really want to do shoulder stand but haven't got the control to get up there and our teacher tells us off if we look like we're throwing ourselves around to get up there!
Camel pose - although am working on it!
Boat pose - my core shakes like anything straight away!
Eagle pose - can do the lower body but can't do the arms at all, are my arms just too short?!

If you're struggling to get up into shoulder stand you could try starting from legs against the wall and raising up from there - you can move your feet back to the wall if you feel wobbly.

I like all your favourites but also like your least favourites! My best are probably bow and camel - i do like back bends. My particular nemesis are arm balances - even crow, which is supposed to be the easiest.

Lovely to see our shiny new topic.

Ooh can I join in?

My favourite is going from plank to cobra, it's taken me ages to be able to do it really smoothly.

My least favourite is anything involving balance. I'm terrible, although after a year of practice I'm improving ever so slightly. I reckon I'll have standing Buddha nailed by 2017 Smile

love; tree, wheel (crab?), crow, sun sal.

Really bloody annoy me because I'm not good at them; sitting and trying to touch my toes forward bend and reverse triangle, my balance goes squiffy.

My balance is awful.

I am beginning to get there with some of the ones where you keep your hip high or open. So Tree in Lotus and cosmic dancer are a bit better but I wobble terribly.

I am also not chaturangaring properly yet, very little elbow mobility and not enough upper body/shoulder strength.

I'm just back from Mysore this morning, and my teacher was saying its all about the pelvic floor for both of those poses. Squeeze squeeze squeeze.

I love all the pigeons, down dog and variations, back bends..

When I say Mysore, I mean Mysore practice up the road at my teacher's mini studio. Sadly not India.

Yes, love your just back from Mysore this morning as tho popping to the shops! Grin maybe cosmic travelling of a Wednesday morning! Sounds interesting tho. I'll look on the other thread.

I love down dog; I loathe swan - my hips are so out of alignment I practically need a small building underneath the hip of my bent leg to keep my butt aligned.

Love the tree, can't do don't like the plough.

Love:
Sun salutations
Warrior sequences
Coming up to moon pose
Head stand
Plough pose

Don't care for:
Goddess pose (dodgy knees)
Crow pose (one dodgy wrist)
Side plank on one side (said wrist)

Currently can't quite manage but improving:
Full wheel (can stand on head)
Any kind of binding

I love shoulder stand and the plough but I do fear suffocation on occasion if I don't get the position quite right.

There are so many poses where an ample bosom is a major hindrance.

I'm not good with names but I like the one where you go from a warrier pose into standing on 1leg and having arms and the other leg out horizontal like a T

I love sharvasana after a strenuous class too.

"the one where you go from a warrier pose into standing on 1leg and having arms and the other leg out horizontal like a T"

Sounds like airplane pose.

I like that one, too. And I also like going from Warrior to Half Moon Pose. Can't get my eyes off the floor in that pose yet, though.

Yes it's like the first one but with arms alongside the ears 'over' the head. We're working towards the half moon pose by using a block under the hand that touches the floor. It's good to see where it's all heading.

Dodgy knees means I've excused myself from that pose so long ago that I don't even remember how horrible it feels Smile

With salutations I just cannot get my leg through my arms very well to step forward (in the version we do). Does anyone else find that. Ones I line and dislike change and sometimes swap! At the moment I enjoy squatting and partner work. I am a bit lop sided from mini stokes and we often put our hands together and the knuckles of our thumbs against the forehead - that straightens me out like nothing else. When I get on the laptop I'll try to copy an extract from the how yoga works books about preferences. (if I remember)

babybarrister - Found your nemesis: Reclining hero pose.

HorsesDogsNails · 15/07/2015 22:04

I like

Warrior sequences
Shoulder stand
Downward dog and upward dog , going from one to the other!
Camel
Fish

I'm not very good at

Crow - I'm not brave enough to lift my feet off the ground!
Wheel - I'm not strong enough to get up!
I've got tight hamstrings as well so forward bends are coming along slowly....
Pidgeon - I have to stay there for ages before my body relaxes into it!

I am getting stronger but it's a slow process!

"With salutations I just cannot get my leg through my arms very well to step forward"

I can step forward all the way to between my hands on the right side, but can't step that far at all with my left leg. I find this really puzzling and would love to hear comments & suggestions about how I can improve this.

baby they call it fixed firm in the class I do. I love that, and saddle. Also love

  • dancer pose
  • standing head to knee
  • tree
  • frozen cartwheel (don't think that's proper name!)
  • side crow

Hate
  • Eagle
  • camel (makes me feel terrible, happier in a full wheel pose)
  • dolphin
