Hi everyone,

So I was offered an admin job a few weeks ago in the nhs and have been going through the employment checks. The last thing to do was my reference checks which I think were sent to a manager last week. I contacted my line manager how long it would take and if it would be her to review them. She responded with an email that said a lady has been trying to contact me to discuss the position but hasn't been able to get through to me and it I can supple my number to her. She isn't in the office until tomorrow and I'm full off anxiety and worry. Why does she need to discuss with me? I'm so worried and I'm so upset I don't want them to just now reject me. My current employer reference will be fine. The other one should be too as far as I know... maybe a few sick days but that's all. Someone help me haha

Well I wouldn't worry just yet unless you were sacked from your last job for stealing or whatever.
Quite often they want a different referee or are questioning gap in your employment or need to know something else.
I've worked in the NHS for 40 years and they nearly always contact me wanting to discuss something to do with the position.

Are you certain your previous employers have responded to the reference request? Some Trusts/CCGs require sign off by someone senior if references don't materialise so she may be asking if there is someone else they can ask.

Thank you for commented.

I know they have responded to the reference request as I can see that on trac.
I will post what the email said below. I haven't been sacked no. My current employer will of left a good reference. The other referee should of done too apart from as I say some sick days. I over think everything and it's maybe nothing to worry about I would just be so upset if they wouldn't let me now have the job!

Good Morning Lauren,

Karen would like to discuss your application for the Administrator post tried to get in touch with you last week by telephone but could not contact you so sent you an email on Thursday.

Karen is not in the office today but please could you let her know if there is a good time to call you tomorrow and also provide her with a contact number please.

After this I asked if anyone else could give me some information as I was worried and she said that this manager is who deals with this part of the process and would need to wait for her phone call.

Argh😅 xxx

I wouldn't worry - they may want to discuss a start date if all checks have been completed.

I wouldn’t worry about that either. It could literally be anything to do with hiring you and I’d think highly unlikely to be them rejecting you.

She rang me this morning,

I am so distressed!!!
So it was due to 46 sick days in 2 years with current employer.
I explained this was due to my little boy who had a viral infection and chicken pox and then also due to my condition leading up to an operation which led to me having 6 weeks off work.
She then said the other concern was pervious employer states I went through disciplinary. I then explained there was severe bullying within the workplace which resulted in me taking them to court and I won the case. I then reassured her I've had no time off since m my op and it has caused me no problems. She has gone away and said she will ring me as soon as she can.
I've cried my eyes out since. I just feel like this isn't going to work out for me I'm so upset. Surely because I have reasons i can't be rejected ? Someone help 😕😕 xxx

What reason do you think they will give if they don't keep you on? Hardly your fault RE son and operation. And you took a bully to court and won? It shows you have strength and courage of your convictions. Please do not worry. Please let us know what happens Smile

Why were you off sick if it was your son who was sick? Shouldn't that have been carers leave either paid or unpaid? It shouldn't impact on your sickness record?

I wasn't sure if my reasons of sickness would justify it or if they may feel I'm too much of a risk. I've been totally honest and they are my reasons for the sickness and unavoidable. The other one with the disciplinary she has actually breeched the court agreement and if I lose this job because of that she can get into a lot of trouble. She shouldn't of mentioned it. Just a waiting game isn't it. Im guessing she's going to speak to HR. Then ring me...

I agree - if this is actually down as sick leave in your record, it could look bad for you - taking paid sick leave when its your child who is ill is most likely a breach of contract.

i wouldn't worry. if your new employer liked you enough they will do a risk assessment if they havent received a reference or something. i am a band 6 manager in NHS and have done this before for a candidate :)

They may also put you on an extended probationary period to assess your reliability and childcare circumstances
Fingers crossed x
