Career Change

I've been in marketing for most of my career, I'm in a steady job within the business support sector for many years now, however I'm not engaged by this anymore. Love the people but none of the job requirements fills me with passion

I have an interview on Monday with the NHS as a complaints coordinator, so very different yet I do feel I have many transferable skills that will lend itself to this role,

Am I completely bonkers? Most of my family think so given a, it's a salary drop and b, a different sector.

I just need something more fulfilling, started to feel like since my father passed away last year.

Thanks to anyone who comments on this middle of the night ramble!

Not bonkers at all. I’m a career coach and you wouldn’t believe the number of people who have decided to change sectors during the pandemic to something that they feel more aligned with. I have loads of clients who have opted to do just that. Provided that you can manage on your new lower pay, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make a roaring success of it! Best of luck x

Ah thank you so much for commenting, it's really positive and interesting to know there are others thinking the same and not bonkers. Done most of my prep for the interview, eeeek 🙏

Ignore PP who obviously has a bee in their bonnet.

It sounds great. Our working lives are so long that it would be deathly dull to do the same thing for your whole career.

Do it! I switched from marketing in the private sector to an NHS role 6 years ago and wish I had done it sooner.

Good luck op and good on you. I desperately want a career change. I despise my career and have been very miserable/unwell the last year or so with an awful boss who has just cemented my career hate. It's not for me and I hate myself every day over my choices. But don't know what I'd enjoy or be good at or be able to get a shot at. Any career change success stories would be welcomed!

I have quite a few from my clients - as I mentioned upthread, I’m an independent career coach (previously I coached in a corporate public sector role). I have had shedloads of clients coming to me in 2020 telling me that now is the time for change and that they’ve put up with a shitty career too long! If you’re feeling like that and want some help working out what you want to do instead, I’m happy to offer you a free hour of coaching over Zoom or by phone. You’d be amazed how much clearer things can get in an hour. You absolutely can change your career and you don’t have to tolerate a job you hate.

@Lemonpiano

NHS complaints coordinator. So you're going to be responsible for facilitating cover ups of abuse, neglect, discrimination and other harms? And that's appealing to you?

Ouch...

Are you still in communications within the NHS or something different?

Not exactly communications, but not clinical. I had to retrain on the job with a professional qualification. The skills I have from marketing and previous degree really helped as I have report writing and presentations to do. I am so glad I did it, I certainly have a better work balance and job satisfaction. Good luck Smile

That's amazing thank you for the feedback 🙌 I certainly think the skills I've achieved over the last 15 years can be applied to this role. Thank you 😊 ☺️

@MirandaWestsNewBFF aw that is so sweet and kind of you! I hadn't thought about career coaching but maybe that is what I need! I have been putting myself out there into what I'm hoping to move into into but after having such a rough year at work all the confidence snd life has been knocked out of me by my boss I just feel totally useless and like I would never be able to be good at a job for example I've had a few interviews and second round interviews, been in the top 2 or 3 for the job and then I start panicking and thinking if I did get it maybe I shouldn't even accept because I wouldn't be able to learn and they'd find out quickly I'm useless. Sorry I'm rambling x

Oh bless you! I come from a corporate hr background and I’ve done loads of interviewing over the years. The biggest differentiating factor between the successful candidates and those who don’t make it through is confidence, so definitely worth working on it. If you get through to the interview you’re obviously good enough for the job on paper so don’t do yourself down! Drop me a pm and let’s have a chat x
