Hi
My OH has been working in a shop for a few months after getting a higher qualification and been jobhunting for a job in his field

He's just had an opportunity for a fixed term (with option of extention if there's the work) in a related field. It's a £5k higher salary than his shop job- and not nights.

I'm due mid July, and his contract is til 30th June.

(His shop job have said that if there's work he will be able to come back, and with new raised income there's scope to add to our current financial buffer with the aim of making it 6 months worth of outgoings, so we wouldn't be completely up the creek if he doesn't get kept on).

I'm aware he's not going to be eligable for paid paternity, or shared parental leave, but unsure where this would leave him with being able to come for scans etc?

Should he tell them before he starts? (starting mid Jan)?

Also, any other considerations?

I don't think employers are legally obliged to let people have time off to attend other peoples scans. I'm sure if he asks nicely though they'll let him take some annual leave. Theres usually only a couple of scans aren't there? Or am I a bit behind the times.

The father is entitled to time off (unpaid unfortunately, though your employer might not deduct it) to attend two antenatal appointments.

Yes Stepen you are behind the times! I have a teenager and my dh could attend his scan, with my younger one he was at the 12 week and 20 week scan, and also emergency time off when I had complications. He didn't lose pay for any of that but that was the employer's choice.
