Leaving a Job

Hi All,

I need a little advice - my current job I have only been in for just over 5 months, but I have been struggling with serious work related stress and anxiety and have finally been offered another job! I need to get back to them by the end of the week but meanwhile I have to somehow tell my current employer that I am leaving and I am really unsure how to go about it considering I have only been there a short while. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I work in a very small company so slightly concerned about how I may be treated during the notice period. Please be kind!

How long is your notice / are you still on probation for example
Hand your notice in, offer to do a handover and behave professionally
Do they know you’re not happy ?

@rubyslippers my notice is a month (4 weeks), and no there wasn’t a probationary period, they don’t know I’m not happy no I have found it difficult to talk to them so decided to quietly look for other jobs

I just wrote a resignation letter and e-mailed it to my boss. It’s a business transaction at the end of the day, I left 6 months to the day after starting in a very small company.

Bite the bullet and tell them you have another role that you gave decided to take. If they treat you poorly it’s only 4 weeks and you could take annual leave if possible.

This is the template I used

[Insert your name]

[Insert your Address]

[Insert date]

[Insert Recipient name]

[Insert Title]

[Insert Organisation]

[Insert Address]

Dear [Insert manager’s name],

Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from the position of [Insert job title] at [Insert company].

As per the terms of my employment contract, i will continue to work for the company for the next [Insert notice period length], completing my employment on [Insert last day you intend to work].

I have enjoyed being a part of the team and am thankful for the opportunities you have given me during my time here. If there are any areas in particular you would like me to focus on during my notice period, please let me know.

Yours sincerely

It's just the way the world works, they shouldn't treat you badly. They will have a month to find your replacement and you have only been there 5 weeks after all.

Do it face to face, then email a copy. Be strong, firm and professional.

I'm feeling you, iv been in my new job since August after being made redundant, I hate it, I'm working from home, I don't know who anyone is or what their role is, no one tells me anything, there's no explanation, they just say do this and then I have figure it out myself.
I spend most of my day in tears as I'm so pissed off.
I'm going to quit and I'm going to be honest and say you people are taking the piss out of me and I won't be working my notice, try it, what are they gonna do?

@BashfulClam thank you for your advice, that template is a good one I think that will be what I will use, I am just worried about telling them really!

@tigger001 thank you, I suppose you are right yes, it has only been 5 months although it feels so much longer as I’ve wanted to leave for a while now.

@Jayaywhynot I understand your situation, that is what I feel like doing, I wish I didn’t have to work a notice period as every day I spend there almost reduces me to tears but I know I have to come across as professional at the same time! It’s such a hard one :( I want to be able to enjoy the fact I have been offered a new job but still being tied to this place is what brings my mood right down :’(

I put a countdown up on the board in my kitchen, did in work days so counted down from 20... helped a tiny bit.
