Work

To ask what time you leave in the morning and arrive home in the eve?

I'm just curious. I work full time mon to fri, I leave at 6:15 to arrive at work a bit before 8:00. Then leave work at 17:00 to arrive home around 18:45. Worrying that my commute time is affecting my focus at work. My friends and family think I'm mad but I've always thought it were normal. Does any one else travel for 1hr 45 mins (or around this) each way for work?

I’ve always felt that over an hour is a long commute. It takes me about 45 minutes at the moment.

I travelled 1.5 hours each way prior to lockdown (now wfh)
BUT that commute wasn’t entirely by choice (my employer moved offices last year and my commute doubled) and I only did it three days a week (wfh remainder).

It ate into my time so much, whittled away quality time with dd, was inefficient, stressful and exhausting. I hated it. I’m unlikely to go back to that commute.

No. I did at one point but it killed me mentaly and emotionally and i didnt even have a kid then. Worst year of my life.

My work day is generally 7.30/8 to about 4.30.

I leave a 6.30 and get back about 5.30 or 6 these days and am only in the office 2 or 3 days a week with the rest from home. Commute is 50 min to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. Much more managable

My commute is 7 minutes with no traffic (and foot down!) Up to 12 minutes with traffic. I’d say over an hour would be a deal breaker for me.

I leave the house at 7.15am, drop a child at the bus stop, get to work for 7.25/7.30. Officially start work at 8am. Officially finish work at 3.30pm, leave about 4.30pm. Very rarely go straight home, always picking up/dropping DC etc.

Gosh that seems like an awful lot. I’m not sure I could justify that to myself, personally.

I leave at 8:00, get to work at 8:15-8:20, start work at 8:30. Leave work at 5, home by 5:15. I feel very lucky to have such a short journey.

I hate commuting, all through my working life I’ve had a rule of no more than 30 minutes. I use to do a 30 min cycle as it was longer to drive. I then had a 15-20 min drive and currently have a 5 min cycle or 15min walk. I would much rather a much lower salary and smaller commute. I also don’t think people cost their commutes properly. You have the cost of transport but then also the time cost and to recoup a long commute you would need to earn £15k+ more to even break even.

I was thinking about this the other day and it’s interesting to see someone else has posted.
I leave home at 5.30 and then get home between 5 and 6. It’s a really long day and now with Covid wish I either worked closer or had the flexibility to work from home occasionally.
I’ve always commuted and worked long hours and a bit like you @unknownn wondered what ‘normal’ looked like.
A lot depends on where you live I guess but a long commute I find really stressful especially if the trains are delayed or cancelled

I leave home at 0755, get to work at 0810. Leave at 1615, home by 1630. I work in a school.

The commute time is a little ridiculous when I think realistically. I get home and have a crappy quick dinner, shower, then sleep. Repeat. It's not a life really. And as @Southeast15 said, the delays especially with Covid is really stressful. I just can't keep my head up at work recently

I leave at about 7.20am to be in work for 8.30am. Arrive home between 4.30-5.30pm depending on my shift and traffic.

I find that manageable. If I had to leave earlier I could cope, but I really don’t like working any later than I do. I like to enjoy my relaxing evenings!

Is your commute time affecting you at work?

I do that commute about 2 days a week and a slightly shorter one (1 hr 20 mins) 3 days a week

Have done this for more than 20 years now - I find it far less stressful now as my kids are both over 18. I only felt terrible guilt and frustration when they were young and a cancelled train would mean missing a bedtime or not getting precious time with them!

80% Have less than 30 minutes each way.

You never get the time back, how much of your life do you want to devote to work.

I am working from home now, but before it was either 20 minutes by bike or 30 minutes by public transport each way.

OP that's a long time spent commuting. Does the salary reflect a 1hr 45 min commute each way? I'd hope so

I leave home at 6:45, get to work at 6:53. Leave at 16:00 and get home about 16:08 but it's just shy of two miles each way

I had a job about eight years ago which was six miles (15-20 mins) each way. The company relocated after I'd been there around three years and my commute went from six miles each way to twenty six miles each way. I left after 2-3 months. It was shift work and sometimes on until 23:30 then the drive home, not what I needed

@FiveGoToLidl your comment really rings true about missing family time especially if the trains are late. I spend the last part of my working afternoon getting stressed about what time I may actually get home and whether there will be any evening left to enjoy.
I forgot to mention my commute should be an hour and a half but I have to leave half hour early in the morning just in case there are train problems so I’m not late and then an hour and a half home on a good day. So far this week I haven’t managed either way in under two.

I leave at 6:45 & finally get home at about 9pm most days - but I have a large gap in the middle. My commute is currently about 30 minutes

However, over the years I have had everything between 0 (WFH) and 2.5 hours (I had a good contract, but had to move house 8 months before it was done. I used to leave at 5:45 walk/bus/train/bus/bus/walk then reverse home. All through a very horrible winter. But I knew it was time limited & I was well paid, couldn't do it otherwise.

1:45 I could do in certain circumstance, but wouldn't be my choice & id look for something closer. Unless it was a brilliant stepping stone OR exceptionally well paid (but even then it wouldn't be a long term thing).

But it's how YOU feel that matters 🤷🏻‍♀️

When I was still allowed to go to the office I left home at 07:30 arrived at work at 07:50, left work at 16:40 and got home at 17:00 (the traffic was always heavier for the evening commute). I got an hour for lunch and would always take at least 45 minutes.

However I’ve been WFH for 6 months. Which means I’ve lost the separation between home and work and I honestly feel like I’m living at work. I reckon I’m working at least an extra day every week. It’s miserable, I can’t wait to be allowed to go back to the office (unlikely to happen in the next 6 months Sad)

I work 2 half days. 1 normal and a long.
So due to covid there is no breakfast club so I have to drop my kid off to school later so leaving later than usual.
So leave house at 8.15. Kid dropped off about 8.35 at work about 8.45.
Monday and Tuesday home by about 12-12.45 depending on how busy it was.
On Wednesday I'm home by about 4.45 and thurs usually home for 6.
Takes me about 10 minutes to get home from work.

1hr 45 was my commute pre-Covid (now wfh).

I only did it 3 days pw, that was enough, I was tired.

Thankfully issues on my journey were rare & I got a seat on the train leg pretty much all the time. I also read books, had plenty of time for social media etc., and got the train with friends frequently.

I do miss the social aspect of working tremendous!

I cycled to work today (12 mins).
I only work 2 sessions a week, one night 8-8 and one day 8-2pm.
Doesn't seem like much, pays the bills though!

@unknownn I think from your comment that your worried about your focus at work that it’s a sign it’s becoming too much even if it wasn’t previously.

WFH at the moment but I go for a 20 minute walk every morning before work and same or longer at the end of the day.

Pre-covid it was a 30 min bike ride each way or 45 mins public transport. I enjoy the exercise before and after work but any time I had to use public transport I found it depressing and I still needed to wind down after the day. I think 3 hours a day commuting is really, really tough. I hope you find a solution OP.

Leave the house at 6.30 to arrive at 7.30 which means I can leave at 4pm and home by 5.30. If I left it an hour later to go to work, it would add 30 minutes because of traffic in the city and same with going home.

Pre Covid mine was 2 hours each way. So I'd leave home at 6.50am to get to my desk for 9am. I'd leave the office at 5.10pm and get home for just after 7pm.

Report

I've got a 20/25 minute run to work in the morning and a 40 minute walk home in the afternoon.

I'd hate a long commute.
