Anyone else started a new job recently and WFH?

I have just finished my 3rd week of a job I was so excited and grateful to get.

I don’t know if it’s because we are WFH but I feel like I am not really contributing much? When I need to ask a question, trying to pin someone down for a quick teams chat has been difficult.

I feel like I’m winging it everyday and I just don’t like the feeling.

anyone else in a similar situation Sad ?

I am in a similar position & feel the same. The role I am doing is the same as my previous role & in the same industry so I was lucky that I have been able to hot the ground running.
I feel like the type of query that would be a quick chat in passing in an office situation becomes a bigger thing in the WFH situation. It really is not the ideal situation however we are showing are ability to adapt to a difficult environment & i hope this will gain us respect moving forward.

It's funny you should post this as I am currently job hunting and this is a mild concern of mine.

Most of the jobs I have applied for are wfh. Whilst that is what I'd like in the long term, I worry about how I'd find my way and integrate into the team if everything is remote. Zoom/MS team meetings are useful but they don't beat face to face interaction.

I started a new role whilst working from home.

I had a lot of video calls and sharing screens for the first 3 weeks.

If I get stuck I send a Teams message and either get a reply or a phonecall to discuss the answer.

I don't think it could have gone much better.

trying to pin someone down for a quick teams chat has been difficult.

In your position , I would create a teams chat with all the FB people who might help. Post your questions in there.

People will see who is being helpful and if no one is answering you, someone might help out.

If you think people are not being helpful, you could ask whoever is managing you who best to ask for help.

All the best.

trying to pin someone down for a quick teams chat has been difficult.

If I struggle to contact someone I book a 10-15min call in a free slot their calendar. If you continue to have problems getting colleagues to engage with you ask your line manager for advice.

Thanks for your replies all. I’ve had a talk with myself and basically told my self to get on with it! I need to cut myself some slack. It’s only been a few weeks.

I do put calendar requests in, but I feel bad doing this. I just need to get over myself.

@FTMF30 it was a huge concern of mine. Almost to the point I didn’t apply.

But once I was honest with myself this is the new way of doing things. What made me feel better was thinking it’s probably as strange for them as for me.

Yes you are right. It's just something we all need to get used to.

I've started 2 jobs during the pandemic WFH.

I did as a pp suggested and created a MS Teams group chat with my team (much to my new manager's surprise 🙂) and it worked well.

You've also just got to pick up the phone and call. Most people seem to prefer a chat these days to an IM or another scheduled meeting.
