Hi, I work in the NHS, as a nurse.
Our days have been cut 8am-14.15 Monday to Friday, whereas we would have normally been doing 9.5 hour days, I usually do 3 a week.
Since our work has dropped, our hours have changed, which is fine, it's nice to be home early, and Ilk do whatever the NHS needs at this time.
But we're not getting a break in that time, then management are putting half hour lunch on the end of our shift, so our online roster says finish time 14.45.

Is this the norm, or a bit cheeky?
We should be getting a 15 min break at least shouldn't we?

By law you should get a 20 minutes break and it cant be at the start or end of your shift

Tonemeth Wed 15-Apr-20 10:52:27

It's illegal. They have to give you the break over 6 hours, they cant add it to the end of your shift. Just think about if this is the hill you want to die on right now though. Its wrong, but its 15 mins - is it worth kicking a stink up about right now?

Its 20 minutes, not 15

Are they paying you until 14.45? Breaks dont have to be paid. Although breaks shouldn't be at the beginning or end of shift

For me personally it would depend on how hard work is. On hard days where I work, I am having my 20 minutes, if it's a slow, easy day, I'd rather leave early.

Agree, it's not worth the hassle but still considering what's going on within the NHS, it's a bit of a piss take.
They aren't paying us til 14.45, just putting the extra half hour on so it looks like we've had a break.

Are they trying to preserve ppe?
This is why we are having to work longer to keep the ppe on as we are running out.

Dimosaur Wed 15-Apr-20 12:15:50

No, don't think that's the reason, we have to change all ppe between patients as we do aerosol generating procedures.
So I guess if one patient had it and we didn't know, and the next didn't have it, if we didn't change ppe, we could pass it on.

They are taking the piss. If you work over 6 hours you are entitled to a 20 minute break. Your break cannot be at the end of your shift.

Tonemeth Wed 15-Apr-20 18:57:30

Its 20 minutes, not 15

I know, wasnt thinking- although I wonder why they give a pretend break of 15, even odder.

dementedpixie Wed 15-Apr-20 18:59:43

They give a pretend break of 30 minutes. Do you have a contract detailing hours and breaks @Dimosaur

Dimosaur Wed 15-Apr-20 19:04:01

Well normally its a 9.5 hour day with a half hour lunch.. Hours have changed due to pandemic, so would Contact be right now?

Are you saying they are paying you half an hour more than you work?

You finish at 2.15 but are paid to 2.45?

dementedpixie Wed 15-Apr-20 22:26:37

No she said she gets paid until 2.15

There are exceptions to the rule for emergency services and situations
