Handhold please, think I'm handing in my notice tomorrow for a job I've only had 2 months.....

Feeling really guilty about it. They were so pleased to get me and have been so welcoming. It's a third sector organisation, doing a job I really love 3 days a week, however it's just not working for me.

I leave home at half 7, stick the kids into breakfast club, drive to the city and then leave at 5, drive an hour home to get them out of after school club at 6pm. I crunched the numbers last night and after paying petrol, parking and childcare I am clearing about £50 a day after tax. I am tired and guilty.
I have started my own self-employed business in the same field on the other two days a week and charge £35 an hour. This business is currently full and I am having to turn away clients.
It's a no brainer really, just not looking forward to telling my boss tomorrow. Also, there's an 8 week notice period and I'll also be letting young clients down (it's a therapeutic role).
Please someone tell me that it's OK to make mistakes in taking jobs etc and that my workplace won't shun me for the next 8 weeks! I think I knew early in December that I'd made a mistake but felt I had to carry on for at least a year, but I don't think I can anymore.

No don't feel guilty ,not sure why you need to give 8 weeks notice . Don't most places have a probation period of 3-6 months ? So you shouldn't have to do that long a notice .

I've been in my job nearly 6 months and I hate it, depressing office, horrible co-worker, zero benefits. Going to give them a year then leave. They've mentioned how much money they spent hiring me and don't want me to stay for only a year, well they should have been more welcoming!

It's 8 weeks because of the therapeutic nature of the work, it's not great to leave young people in the lurch unless you have to. I'm hoping they will find a way to reduce my hours in the meantime somehow.

Greygardens I was initially going to give it a year, and if I was going to another employer I think that would have maybe been the best course of action, but as i want to be self-employed I don't really have to worry about how this looks in a CV. You're right in what you say, has anyone asked for any feedback? Do they know you're miserable?

Could you do 2days a week for them?

Do 2 yourself and have a midweek day off.

I think most people have at least one experience of taking a wrong job. It's so hard to know from an hour or two with people you've never met before what a job will be like, especially as the bad bits are usually glossed over or the real length of a commute not realised or whatever.

Anyone getting though life without this experience at least once is very very fortunate !

I handed in my notice and they've taken it very well, and assured me I will be welcome back at any point in the future, which is very kind of them. Just a couple of months to go now then. I know I've made the right decision.
