Resigning without a job to go to

My current low paid, part time job has recently become extremely stressful and it is making me ill (waking in the night worrying, jaw ache from clenching teeth). It will not get better until spring at the earliest (if at all) and it is also not something I want to do long term.

Does resigning without a job to go to look really really bad on a CV? I already have a gap from having a couple of children and being a sahm until they started school.

I know what career I want. There are opportunities that I am going to apply for now. But I also have a months notice at work, so if I resigned now, I would be free in the new year to take up a new role. I think there may be more opportunities coming up then- assuming companies aren’t recruiting right now because of Christmas but will start afresh in the new year?

But will it look and sound really bad if I resigned now?

It's easier to go fro a job to a job

Can you afford it?

It’s not ideal but sometimes you have to put your health first.

It does look bad in my opinion. A friend did it recently and it took over 6 months to find something else (which also wasn’t what she ideally wanted to do and isn’t well paid).

Start applying now and think of ways to reduce the stress, after all you don’t really care if they aren’t happy as you’ll hopefully be leaving soon! Why’s your job so stressful, sounds horrible.

You could consider taking sick leave for the stress but I’m not sure if you have to declare that to new employers.

If you can afford it then do it. Stress is horrible and if you can avoid it I would.

I've done it- twice. However I've always temped to keep us solvent when the dream job hasn't been forthcoming.

I did it. I had been put under a lot of pressure and stress. My df was also quite ill so I quit.
I had saved money in the event so I could have that break.
I then joined an agency and did work for them before getting the job I have now.
Could you get signed off with stress and job hunt that way?

December and the first few weeks of January are usually quiet on the job front. I'd stick it out until the new year, but apply for jobs.

You will get paid for the bank holidays. The new year is about 6 weeks away, and Christmas day and Boxing day and NYD are not work days.

Don't quit. Stop caring. Go in, do the minimum knowing the worst they can do is sack you and if they do, so what?

Your stress will drop once you make the decision that you dont have to care anymore.

Get your wages, look elsewhere and leave when you are ready.

I've recently done this. While I'm concerned it will 'look bad' and I'm thinking about how to cover the gap on my CV, I'm glad I made the decision. My health has improved and I'm using this time to really focus on my mental health. I'm viewing it as an extended Christmas holiday, and I'm going to be looking for work seriously come the new year. I do have worries, like how long it might take, and again, how to explain the gap. I do a bit of freelance work so I may just say that I left to do that instead. Good luck OP, there are pros and cons and you have to weigh it up.

P.s I'm bored out of my brain 😂 but trying not to complain too much!

I think it can be fine to do; depending on what you do next. I have done this a few times and have always just found another job. I have explained that I needed to spend some time with kids and that kind of stuff and it has never been an issue. Depends if you have the money to tide you over really 🙂

Join every temp agency in your area
Then you hopefully won’t have gaps and when the opportunity you are waiting for comes up you are free to go for it

Can you afford to be out of work? I would agree by staying in work if you can, preparing your CV and be ready to go for it after Christmas and the job market wakes up again.

Thanks all. I can afford to be out of work as DH is well paid. I like the sanity of having a job though... ha ha ha.

Sadly in my job, Christmas and New Year and other BHs aren’t days off. I had booked them off but they are threatening to cancel my holidays.

I’ll try and stick out for another week and see if anything is forthcoming.

I would probably quit, if it was me and if I was confident of there being other jobs.

But I guess you will have that gap on your cv going forward not just the next job but future ones who look at your employment record. And you'd have to explain why you quit. Whereas if you can stick it out it looks "neater" on your cv

If they are being awkward about Christmas and I hated it and I could afford it then I would just hand in my notice! Very satisfying 😂

I did it. It wasn't really an issue just said I ended the job and took a break from work to attend to some personal issues. Never questioned.
