Work

A Whole Lot of Nothing

Just a quick post about something I've noticed about myself and wondered if anybody else does this.

I set out to achieve something in my spare time; perhaps it's learning to cook a couple of new meals; or it could be research for a novel I'd like to write; or it could be learning to become a brilliant drawer. And yet, very little gets done.

I've noticed people around me, usually successful people, write a book in 2 years, or they create a successful podcast, or they complete 3-4 brilliant paintings in the time I've said I'd do something and I've made no progress.

It's the same with work - I think I've done brilliantly and when I have a monthly review, it's nothing but criticism and all the things I haven't done. It's like my work is way off the mark.

Can anybody relate to this, and if so, what have you done to resolve it?

Would love to know your answers!

Lee.

Hi OP, I think having goals for your spare time that never quite happen isn't unusual, but your work situation is more concerning. Do you have monthly goals that you don't meet? Or do you think your boss has unrealistic expectations?

Lets focus on work for now as that sounds quite concerning.

How do you spend your time OP? Is every minute accounted for or do you get distracted with things which are not a priority or nothing to do with you?

How do you organise your work? Do you work collaboratively or alone?

Whatever your method is, you get into a routine of planning and tracking your activity and deadlines.

Hi people,

Thanks for the replies.

The job I do is hard to plan for; you are always dragged away on avenues that you can't really get away from. It's easy to fall into being reactive.

I'm very well organised and have a week planned out, but it always never seems to be enough. They pick at everything else and not the good stuff I've done.

They aren't bullies, but I want it where they can't pick up anything at all. I was wondering what I could do to be a hyper-efficient as possible and get 8 hours work into 2 hours, or something like that.

A odd question I know, but if anybody has advice, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks again,

Lee.

What is the main feedback - your work lacking in quality/speed, or focusing on the wrong things?
