How can I successfully market my HR consultancy?

I'm considering working for myself as an HR consultant to small businesses who do not have an HR function. To provide some background I am a qualified HR generalist with experience across different sectors. I've always worked in London so I'm not sure how to best target local businesses or promote myself. Friends have suggested local facebook groups but I'm not convinced that would be terribly professional. I have my website and Twitter account up and running already. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Most people get work through their network - actual commissions and recommendations to other firms. If you don't have enough of these to get you started, it's probably not a viable business.

As Hermione has said recommendations are often a key way to develop business. So ensure your use LinkedIn to connect with your professional contacts.

Have you thought about your 'perfect' potential client? How big are they? What industry/trade are they in?

I could imagine you could provide support to any local business but if you have experience of a particular type of industry (from your career), it can help you build your niche.

You need to think about who you are selling to - the business owner? How can you catch their attention? What problem are you trying to solve for them? I'd think about some very taliored emails (look at their website/social channels) to ask if they need support.

I'd start following similar HR consultancies, sign up to their enews to see how they market themselves.

LinkedIn. Tap up your network and join groups.

Also try your local BNI - Business network institute. They usually meet weekly and can be excellent if you commit and get a good one.

Also any local networking opportunities, breakfast briefings and so on.

Get a business card and website and get yourself out there.

I agree, networking and using past clients/connections is the best way.

Website is mostly at this point to give additional information and legitimacy.
