My husband is having this nightmare with a job he's doing. He's working for a company and they're are doing an industrial engineering project for another firm.
He's been putting lots of work in and has now not been pain for several months (hourly rate agreed on at the start) When he out his invoice in it was met with 'surprise' and now he's been taken off the job and told not to contact the people they were doing the work for. Now, a new person is being advertised for to replace him.
Any advice on his rights? He says he signed a confidentiality agreement but was for another job? Oh, he was also offered a small percentage of what he's owed to just leave it, or double this small amount to finish art of it. In the meanwhile the company has taken on several staff to 'manage' the project who seem to be doing nothing.
As a contractor, your rights are far less than an employee. If he hasn't signed an agreement or contract stating his hourly rate and scope of the project, his only option is to put outstanding invoices out to debt collection agencies or be prepared to take it to court to sue for his money. Whether you decide to do that will depend on the amount of money outstanding versus the legal costs.
