Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. smile

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

thanks

Fantastic idea. Vibrant riot sounds about right for the most awesome Zombie! I'm a bit out of action with my knitting at the moment (new puppy) but this is something I would love to support. As an ongoing project I'm guessing there will be rolling deadlines.

What a lovely idea. You all work so hard with these beautiful projects - is there a gallery of photos of the Woolly hugs? I would love to see some of them but appreciate they are personal and may not be for display.

Zombie is herself a Vibrant Riot!

MrsSpenserGregson Thu 05-Jan-17 12:47:19

Count me in smile. I've never met Zombie/Candy but have followed her threads with a lump in my throat. What a wonderful lady.

Barktheheralddogssing Thu 05-Jan-17 12:48:46

What a beautiful blanket!

I'd love to contribute by knitting squares. I've never joined in before, what do I need to do?

Btw I'm a fairly basic knitter blush

Lovelybangers Thu 05-Jan-17 12:49:01

Great - I'll get to my knitting shop and stock up.

I am proud to be part of this project. Two squares on their way now - and when I have dug out the rest of my stylecraft stash (from its safe-from-dh hiding place), I will do some more.

Bark - at the most basic level, all you need to do is to knit a 6 inch square.

I find that I need 35 stitches, on a 4mm needle, to give me 6" across, but I am not sure how many rows - you might find you need a few more or less stitches, depending on your tension (how tightly you knit).

You could do a plain square, or a stripy one, or a plain one with embroidery in another colour on it - there are lots of options. Every square is just as special as the others.

Are any financial contributions needed? If so please send me details and I would like to donate. I also know Z in real life.

MrsHathaway Thu 05-Jan-17 12:55:27

Glorious!

There are lots of overlaps in colours with the Trad/Classic I think - I certainly recognise those names from my stash.

Now you have made me cry.

Can I send wool to someone?

Roseformeplease Thu 05-Jan-17 12:59:10

If someone pm's me a link to the wool needed (preferably on Amazon) I will send some from there. I would also need an address. Happy to do this for someone who is able to supply the skill.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans Thu 05-Jan-17 12:59:43

I'd like to donate cash too.

HoggyTruffle Thu 05-Jan-17 13:01:02

Fantastic project. Two zingy squares went in the post today.

glenthebattleostrich Thu 05-Jan-17 13:01:07

Your threads have inspired me to learn to knit and crochet. I'd love to contribute. I'm not very good but practice makes perfect!

Stupid question alert ... Is there anywhere you'd recommend buying the wool?

UnbornMortificado Thu 05-Jan-17 13:01:56

Of course Zombie would want to do something like this ❤️

Will make a donation when I'm down the town. Good luck everyone doing the actual crafting.

I know beginners are welcome but my artistic skills are -5 and my hands shake. I will admire all your work from a safe distance flowers
