Woolly Hugs. Billie’s Butterfly Blankets for a London Children’s Hospice

This is a very special project to help support bereaved families at a London children’s hospice.

We have been approached by lovely MrsDV who works here asking if we can make special blankets for the bed in their Butterfly Suite (post bereavement room) so these will be used to to dress the bed with. We are so glad she did. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive and personal that together we can do for the child and their family.

Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by covering the child in bed so they look comfortable and cosy whilst sending love and a hug to their bereaved parents. Loved and looked after. thanks

The hospice would like to have these blankets in hand for time to come so that they can be ready.

We need your help to achieve this for them, we always say love in every stitch and it will be true again this time, thank you so much if you feel you can help. Our aim is to make four single bed sized blankets, two suitable for younger children and two for older. The hospice have asked for soft colours and with a butterfly theme

If you’d like to donate funds to help us achieve this, please message us, or if you need resources to take part then do let us know. We don’t want anyone unable to take part due to cost.

Crafting info

star We will be using Stylecraft Special DK as blankets will need to be very practical, six inch squares made using 4mm hook or needles. Knit or crochet equally welcome.

The colours…
Duck egg, grape, sage, storm, parchment, pale rose, raspberry, cloud blue, sherbert.

NB – Just these please, no blocking of squares and please knot off sturdily when changing colours or finishing, leave a good end and use a needle to sew in the peskies.

Simple squares are very welcome, but if looking for an idea for theme, these are their suggestions…

Butterflies/Hearts
Teddies, cars, toys, cats etc
Stars, leaves, feathers etc

Last posting please to be Saturday 14th October

Thank you doesn’t seem enough, but the most enormous thank you. star thanks

Are you not accepting 12 inch squares for this? I will try and do some either way but wanted to check.

What a fabulous project. When I get back to England (and I've finished the blanket I'm joining) I will do with pleasure.

I've ordered some more wool (good excuse!) and will get knitting squares when it arrives - I havn't knitted squares for a while as I've been making baby hats for hospital.

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful but heartbreaking project. Have tears in my eyes. Off for a rummage in the stash, I have huge affection for Mrs DV and her gorgeous Billie so I'd love to help on this one flowers

Thanks to The Woollies for organizing this and everyone for contributing time, skill, yarn, funds and love.
It means more than I can say to be able to remember Billie this way.

I have had a rummage and found all but one of the shades on my Peg Samples. I was hoping to be able to post a picture but don't have Storm sad

That's me all over. Nearly but not quite prepared for anything grin

If anyone has simple patterns for 6 inch crochet squares with a appropriate motifs I would be grateful. I am not skilled enough to adapt to size.

TheHatOfDoom Wed 13-Sep-17 21:54:14

What;s the colour on the top right? Raspberry? I thought I had a ball in my stash but looking at that I'm not sure. Looks a lot darker in the pic than what I thought was raspberry.

Costacoffeeplease Wed 13-Sep-17 22:18:22

I've got some of those, will get some done. How many squares will be needed?

clairethewitch70 Wed 13-Sep-17 22:35:28

diamantegal Thu 14-Sep-17 14:09:57

Argh, I did a wool order yesterday and now just seen this. Hopefully I've still got some scraps of those colours - will see what I can do.

And if anyone finds any good crochet patterns, please share - I'll head over to Ravelry now.

diamantegal Thu 14-Sep-17 14:40:07

Sorry, quick question - are 3D butterflies okay? Have abandoned work in favour of pattern hunting and struggling to find any butterflies that aren't sown on afterwards...

diamantegal Thu 14-Sep-17 14:40:56

Sown? Sewn. I do know the difference between gardening and sewing. Honest!
