Welcome to the most beautiful corner of Mumsnet, here the love and support is boundless, these are the folk you need to be around, come and join us, you'll not regret it :) Our inspiration comes from the wonderful Zombie, a true legend who continues to inspire us.

We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

So many blankets with beautiful women going through treatment now because of your love and support. Thank you doesn't even come close. xx

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine Gin

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, maybe a bit unsure, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Next dates to aim for...

Star Star Saturday 4th June Star Star
Star Star Saturday 15th July Star Star

We know this project is ongoing, but folk do like a date to aim for, also it does help us make up kits if we have squares arriving in collections

Another Candy's Hug request, blanket on its way for a quick wash.

Thanks

Now that the Chernobyl rush is over I have returned to a blanket I started over the Christmas holidays. It was going to be a little hug for an older child, but I think it might be better for this project. It is done in rounds. I am currently up to 42" x 42". What is the minimum size for a square blanket for a Candy's Hug?

I am sad that another request is in, but pleased to be part of it at the same time . Flowers

Book - I realise that. I obviously didn't phrase my question very well. I am asking if a square blanket needs to be minimum of 60" x 60" or if slightly smaller is OK for a square one...

Report
PurpleFrog · 20/04/2017 10:43

It depends what is important for the minimum size - the length or the area!

I have just got back from the post office, one package of candy squares and one for the refugee project. Will get cracking on more squares today too.

I should have realised that Purple ! sorry ....no idea :)

Morning PF!

Ideally it would be around 60 long, to make it a good size to snuggle under when lying down, hope that is ok, thank you xxxxx

Thanks KnottyAndPistey. That's fine!
I'm just considering my options Grin

BTW, this blanket was started before the Candy Hugs announcement and uses 4 of Candy's colours plus Lobelia, so that might rule it out anyway...

I might go back to Plan A.

Marking my place, Easter holidays have got me addled so getting zero crochet done. I can't complain too much as I'm having some lovely days with the cubs, even number three who has decided he wants to be potty trained and is refusing to wear nappies and also trousers and underwear...

We had fab news too, littlest has reached the required 60 degrees per hip and can come out of her harness Star

Yay for baby bear! Sympathies re potty training though - its a right pain.

Cheep I'm sure your contribution would be much appreciated! The blankets always have a mixture of intricate squares, with plainer ones to break up the headache-inducing patternedness. So those plain squares are definitely needed. Dates wise, this is an ongoing project, so you can just get some of the right yarn and the right size hook and get going whenever you want to start. PM KnottyAndPistey when you have squares to send if you need the address.

Hi Cheep welcome on board! Plain squares are needed as much as fancy ones. As far as I understand they are good to mix with some of the more multicoloured/patterned squares Smile

Afternoon!
Bear - great news! Its all well and good at home going around naked, but just occasionally you need to take them out Grin
Norm - that is a beauty. I am only half way along mine, what with knitting baby jacket as well. Must pull my finger out!
Cheap as Spin says, just jump in when you are ready :)
I was going to start knitting a square, but the crotchet is pulling at me - decisions, decisions !

Bear that's fantastic news!

Norm another beauty from you!

I did this one last night, it's the Christmas Rose pattern from Jan Eaton. It looks a bit bare in the centre though but that's how it's supposed to be according to the pattern and photo.

Just checking in the new thread.

Beautiful squares and very talented posters.

Still talentless I'm afraid but will aim for a donation next Friday when finances are rectified.

It would of been Zombies birthday Saturday 🎈🍺 I love the fact that this project is keeping her a part of Mumsnet.
