Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2016!! So glad to have you on board! Thanks

For the last two years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers visiting the Leeds area for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project. Photos from previous projects are here...

Each year these marvellous folk bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are again bringing older children/teens over who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

But we always want to do more, and through fellow Mumsnetters we have been in contact with two further groups. These are based in Billericay and Portsmouth, and support slightly younger children, and run by the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. In essence they do the same wonderful work in bringing children over for respite from the shocking conditions.

How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.
So that’s 36 blankets! Grin Star Star Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make in a non-specific colour theme, for a boy or girl.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • If you are thinking about making a whole blanket, please contact us first, thank you x
  • We are aiming for blankets which will be 48 inches by 60 inches.
  • We have started earlier than previously, as the first group (Portsmouth) arrive in May.

Last posting of squares is Monday 11th April.
No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that week. Thank you.

    Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

I can rustle up some squares and may be able to hook a blanket together - can you let me when you'd need them done for?

I can provide some of the other stuff too, DH can get bargainous toiletries etc from the company shop at his work.

Ginxed Thank you so much. Thanks

Last posting of squares to us is Monday 11th, which for us is the day of return to school after Easter.

We aim to sort the squares at the end of that week, and get kits to construction crafters around April 18th. Sending back to us no later than May 14th, how does that sound? xxx

Thank you cake that is amazing of you Thanks xxx

I have plenty of SSDK and will try to do a few! Do they need to be standard unembellished 12" granny square in one colour, or are ones with flowers/stars etc on them acceptable?

Mhw02 · 03/03/2016 18:07

It's okay, I've got my own Stylecraft. Not sure I'll manage a whole blanket this year - March is going to be pretty hectic for me at work, but if whole blankets have a longer deadline I should be able to manage?

Report
Chippednailvarnish · 03/03/2016 18:17

I'm not the world's best knitter, would striped squares in rib or stocking stitch be acceptable?

Report
MrsHathaway · 03/03/2016 20:05

Hope so, Chipped, because that's all I can manage too GrinWink

Waiting for DH to get home so I can place an order on his Prime account. I'm a bit muddled by the colours you're not keen on, so I'm going to stick to blues and turquoises if that's right?

Report
Chippednailvarnish · 03/03/2016 21:09

Fab I'll PM you.
