This is Phase 2 of the Little Hugs project.
Since the beginning, the aim of the Little Hugs has been to provide little blankets that give comfort to babies and small children who are seriously ill in hospital. Hopefully, Phase 2 will continue to do this and more.

We are launching this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. This is the time of her 21st birthday and we are calling the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, we will send little blankets to children who really need a woolly hug and to feel loved and looked after.

We have been talking to this wonderful organisation World Child Cancer and are arranging for Little Hugs to be sent to children suffering from cancer in low and middle income countries. In these countries their overall chance of survival can be under 10% compared to around 80% in high income countries such as ours.
The first batch of Billie's Blankets will be taken to children in Malawi and Bangladesh.

World Child Cancer's response to our initial idea is below:

'Thank you for your email and your kind offer of support. Your blankets are beautiful and I'm sure they provide great comfort to the children who you make them for.
I'm sure the children would love them. Unfortunately most of the children we see at our projects are not able to survive their cancer due to the poor conditions, lack of knowledge and the high cost of medicine in the worlds poorest countries. In these cases we encourage palliative care for the children through our twinning partners who provide training for local project staff on the importance of this care, especially in pain relief. Psychosocial care is also very important and an area we focus on through supporting parent groups and play therapists. I think your blankets would fit in well with this area.'

How you can help:

By crafting:
You can help by either making a whole Little Hug (see yarn spec)
By making 6" squares, either knitted or crocheted, using Stylecraft Special DK yarn

Or by donating for crafting materials:
If you would like to contribute towards materials, you can either donate via Paypal here on our Woolly Hugs website or if you do not have Paypal, please PM RatherBeOnThePiste.

Or by donating to World Child Cancer (see below)

For all Little Hugs:

Minimum size: 24 inches by 24 inches
If you would like to make a blanket that is bigger, that would be lovely.
The children are aged 0 to 14 so we will need bigger blankets too.

Colours: Your choice.
Although for practical reasons, we advise avoiding white and cream.

Things to avoid:
Any embellishments that could scratch delicate skin or could be swallowed.

Suggested yarn: Stylecraft Special DK, a soft, non-scratchy acrylic yarn.
If you would like to make a whole blanket, you could use a different weight and make of acrylic yarn. The essential thing is that it needs to be soft against sensitive and delicate skin and that it can be washed and dried quickly and easily.

If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM Pistey and we'll try to help with materials.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation.
Money is scarce, they really have so little. In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we have ideas for a craft fundraiser later in the year.
We have set up a Just giving Page here
Your donation is welcome at anytime.

These children need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family. x

Oh MrsDV, you have my sympathies as it happened here too, I sent photos of it unravelling to Knots, but there was nothing to be done. So I now double knot wool on and off and have never had another problem, but it is an arse sad

hello, just marking place as I'd lost you all!
Hoping to post some squares in a few days, one day I'm hoping to do a whole blanket grin
When is last posting date for this batch?

BIWI Sun 24-Feb-13 20:42:48

I think you and I were supposed to be doing 8 squares each, to make a blanket together, MOS blush

I've managed 4 so far, but don't think I can do 8 in time (I think the posting date is 16 March?)

MOSagain Mon 25-Feb-13 07:47:38

Thanks BIWI thats what I thought but thought should double check as brain rather addled at the moment. I'm on my 8th now. Will post tomorrow just in case you do manage to do yours. No pressure wink

BIWI Mon 25-Feb-13 08:44:26

No pressure?! grin

I know I won't be able to do that many by then, as I have actual real work to do!

RatherBeOnThePiste Mon 25-Feb-13 08:54:10

Taking the pressure right off.....We need Billie's Blankets for batch two later in the year, yours will go to Bangladesh where a child will absolutely love the hug they get. Xx

PurpleFrog Mon 25-Feb-13 09:25:40

I started a blanket at the weekend - plain coloured 8-round grannies joined with the "join-as-you-go" method. (I'll do anything to minimise the number of ends I have to sew in! grin) I have also been experimenting with different ways of starting/ending the granny rounds. That is one of the nice things about these projects - it gives you a chance to try some different techniques.

So, I should be able to make the first posting date...

MOSagain Mon 25-Feb-13 09:50:27

aww, I wanted mine to go to Bangladesh as have a personal connection there. will push on doing some more and maybe do enough for a whole blanket myself. Just a bit sad that it will be so plain <makes note to get off arse and learn to do something other than boring plan squares>

BIWI Mon 25-Feb-13 12:00:32

Plain is good, MOS!

TheWoollybacksWife Mon 25-Feb-13 21:42:30

I'm finally posting my blanket tomorrow. In the parcel will be some extra granny squares in Stylecraft. There are a couple of blue ones and a pink one that can be used to finish off a blanket.

RatherBeOnThePiste Tue 26-Feb-13 09:32:15

Thank you so much everyone thanks

KnottyLocks Tue 26-Feb-13 09:54:21

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

BornToFolk Tue 26-Feb-13 17:27:24

hee hee, MrsDV, you caught the Stylecraft bug!

My first blanket is going in the post tomorrow. The second one (knitted) is progressing, but not as quickly as it's knitted. I think it will look good when finished though, so I'm perservering.

BIWI Tue 26-Feb-13 17:31:40

MrsDV - I'm knitting with the candyfloss colour right now - inspired by your love of all things pink grin

KnottyLocks Tue 26-Feb-13 20:40:11

Nice range of pinks and purples there , MrsDV grin

I think the only ones I don't have bits of in my stash are apricot and pale rose.

Hi <waves> just been on littlehugs thread which my grandma wants to get involved in, while telling my nan about it and this and the angel one my nan has said she really wants to help with this one. So can she get stuck in this week? She's on about getting wool this week and starting next week and getting my dd to help her to.

KnottyLocks Fri 01-Mar-13 20:47:11

A stunning Billie's Blanket arrived safely yesterday from the very lovely BornToFolk. Huge thanks to her. So beautiful, and there is the most gorgeous little lilac butterfly attached in one corner. Just perfect. The photo is already on Facebook. Huge thanks thanks

BornToFolk Sat 02-Mar-13 15:59:31

Aw, thanks! I enjoyed making it and I'm glad that all the colours worked out OK, rather than just being crazy-bright!

Here's the butterfly pattern if anyone's interested. There are some lovely but rather complicated looking ones on Ravelry but this one is very simple and effective.

bebejones Sat 02-Mar-13 17:47:13
