Woolly Hugs : Angel Hug Project. We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. Thank you Xx(755 Posts)
We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.
We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.
We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.
Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.
To our lovely crafters
* Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.
* Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.
* If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.
* If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.
To our lovely Donors
We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function.
Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.
It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.
Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx
All parcels retrieved from the sorting office and lots of thank yous this afternoon. All photos are up on our Facebook page, and will soon be on the website too, do have a look.

A beautiful Angel Hug arriving from the very lovely MOSAgain, knitted and with sweet little flowers. Tis perfect. Thank you.
Just finished an angel hug
and had a little cry
Will get it washed and dried, but I've got half a ball of stylecraft left do you want me to make some 6 in squares to send with the hug?
Sorry Anya, only just seeing this, that would be lovely if you have time. I do have some squares here already just waiting for some friends
Hugs, and thank you X
I'm sitting here staring at my Angel Hug, started in March, which is still only 7/9s done.
I really must get on with it this weekend.
Still two weeks before the deadline
Just found this thread as it came up on Active
I was not aware of the appeal or the Wooly Hugs, but have a completed blanket in my craft basket. It is a pale cream, so not white, and only 20" x 30" so also a bit smaller than your guidelines. Two counts against it but I would love it to find a home if you think it would be useful.
My lovely aunt used to knit these for our local prem baby unit and I was inspired to
copy her take up my needles again. It was a slow process and sadly my auntie died suddenly so never saw the finished blanket.
Do you think you could make use of it? I haven't yet RTFT but will try to and see how I can help in other ways.
Well, we are glad to have you here now!
We have several ongoing projects if you look at our website here and we'd LOVE to accept your blanket as one of the Little Hugs for Yorkhill. Would be a perfect size for a baby.
There are other projects going on too, and if you like us on Facebook MNWoollyHugs or follow us on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs, you will see other projects that we share to encourage folk to take part in. Currently in addition to our own projects, we are supporting two groups making blankets for Syrian children and also making woolly norks for John Radcliffe's breastfeeding support team.
There are photo albums of blankets on both the website and the FB page.
Once you've seen what the Little Hug project is all about and if you want your lovely blanket to go to that, then PM me and I'll give you the address for posting. Thank you so much.
Today, October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day across the world, and anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby is invited to join an international ‘Wave of Light’ at 7pm local time tonight.
Our candle is ready, we will light it this evening with much love for ALL those amongst our Woolly Hugs community whose lives have been touched by the heart-breaking loss of a baby before, during or after birth.
To join in the Wave of Light, simply light a candle at 7pm and let it burn for at least an hour in their memory.
If you would like to post a photo of your candle on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs, you are very welcome to. X
Thinking of all the beautiful babies gone too soon. Much love to all our families, we are keeping you close in our hearts and thoughts.
A beautiful Angel Hug has arrived from lovely AnyaKnowIt, there is a very slight sparkle to the yarn, have tried to show this on the photo on Facebook (MNWoollyHugs) Huge thanks to her X
The deadline for the next batch of Angel Hugs is Saturday 26th October. Thank you.
I've only just found this thread but I wanted to say thank you to you all. As a recently bereaved mum I know first hand what a huge impact your beautiful gifts have & how much they are appreciated. My little boy was born at 24 weeks and passed 10 days later. We hadn't bought him any blankets & none of the clothes we had would have fitted him. On the day he passed the staff at the hospital wrapped him in a beautiful white crochet blanket and my husband and I cradled him for the first & last time as he went to sleep. It meant so much that he was warm, cosy & comfortable & it's thanks to people like you. I just wanted to let you all know what an important part you played in making what could have been an awful experience more bearable.
Oh my lovely, how devastating, I am so, so sorry for the loss of your precious son.
Thank you for your message, we really do appreciate it.
Gentle hugs for you and thinking of your beautiful boy x
Gentle hugs from me too. Thinking of you and your little boy.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts.
As Pistey said, it is very much appreciated.
Hugs Spacefrog. It is bittersweet making the blankets as you wish they were not required but are glad you can make them to give comfort at a sad time.
Just perfect. More woolly treasure arriving from our lovely DancingShoes today, including an Angel Hug, it has a very gentle sparkle in the wool. Beautiful. A huge thank you to her.
The next collection of Angel Hugs will be going to the Brompton on Friday, all being well. Just about to start sewing on their special labels.
The Angel Hugs were delivered on Saturday 2nd November in the end.
As always they send much love and enormous thanks to all
