Knitters and Crocheters needed for MN Blanket

I've been asked to help make a blanket for Magic8ballhastheanswers family, as she has passed on.

We need knitters and crocheters to make 6" squares in any design you fancy, send them to me and I'll crochet them together.

Co-ordination thread here with wool details. If you can knit/crochet but the wool is outside your price range, please donate your skills - going on previous form, there are many people who want to donate wool but can't do anything with it!

Having taught myself to crochet, I may actually manage to produce a square or two this time though, rather than just promising and I have to go to the wool shop today so no procrastinating. I just wish it wasn't necessary :(

Me too, Soupie. On a forum this big, it's inevitable. But (if you include the one we're planning to raffle next month) this will be the fifth blanket this year and that's just the ones I've done!

As far as i can tell just from the thread, there are many more donors than crafters - please don't feel "shame" at asking for wool, you will actually be doing someone a favour!

I can donate wool but haven't a clue what to buy can someone link me to a site that sells the right sort needed for the blanket?

Obviously I am happy to take donated wool but I am in a position to be able to easily buy it myself - no financial hardship - so if someone wants to create but can't afford the wool, give it to them first :)

Is it perhaps better if donors can put money in a crafter's paypal account who can then go and buy the wool? I'm thinking of saving on postage costs.

Have a look through both and find the colours(s) you like. All the wool will be used whether it's in squares, to join them together or to do a border.


The leftovers from the previous three are now a blanket awaiting edging which will be raffled for charity once back-to-school is out of the way and the leftover wool is becoming teddies as runner up prizes. No wastage!

MissPenteuth is reopening the original paypal for our use, but it's actually better to have wool sent directly to crafters - just put their address in website for delivery!

And DON'T be embarrassed about not being able to afford it, there are far far more donors than crafters at the moment so it really is doing someone else a favour not to buy your own wool!

Sorry, Galaxy, it has to be the specified wool at the specified weight. Otherwise, when it's washed the different yarns will dry at different speeds and the whole thing will warp. Also, the ones chosen are very soft but hard-wearing so they'll look good for a long time

I'm trying not to be too dictatorial - colour and style are completely up to the knitter/crocheter - but consistenct with the wool is surprisingly important

I can't knit & haven't crotchet in years, so doubt I could manage it well enough these days, so won't embarrass myself by offering

but I'm wondering if us seamstresses & embroiderers could get involved with these sort of projects I've worked a lot with fleece with applique & embroidery, squares of that would be comparable to wools you mention for wash care etc & could be sewn in with wool as you would wool/crotchet squares as it doesn't fray & it could add interesting design features to the blankets

Just a thought - if you think it might work, then I'd be happy to donate some squares, perhaps embellished with designs using symbols that meant something to Magic8 ??

Rockin, it's a lovely idea but I don't think it would wash and wear evenly and i wouldn't be able to crochet into it...

However, there's no reason you couldn't do a separate one using fleece??? 60 squares makes a 5'x3' blanket, I bet you'd get more than that

Fair enough - I've not had to wash/wear the wool blankets, so you obviously would know better

Sadly I can't offer to organise a fleece one myself, as have health problems & just don't trust that I'd be able to see it through without making myself ill - lot of other stuff going on for me ATM, which would make having enough time & energy & a clear enough head a bit hard to rely on IYCWIM :(

but might be worth re posting to see if any one else wants to take up the main challenge of the organisation though - I can at least do that bit & add some squares - will be back with my cocoa & a new thread :)

I've taken advice from those who know (I don't have the patience or the money to make one all by myself!) and wouldn't like to risk it

I guess for a fleece one you'd need squares posted to you then sew them all together and back with something - more fleece? Cotton?

I can do the crochet at work which is how I find the time. Sewing is a different matter - can you imagine doing all that by hand?

What you say makes perfect sense, as I say I'm not that knowledgeable with yarn, so could only go by my knowledge on fleece being hard wearing & easy to wash etc - you ladies are the experts on that, not me, it was just an idea.....& yes you are right sewing that many squares by hand would be a bit of a to the system

sadly as I've said above I can't offer to organize/sew the whole thing, but will post to see if anyone else want to take on that bit of the challenge :)
