(949 Posts)I've just heard the sad news about Magic8ballhasstheanswers leaving 6mo twins and a 4yo
If anybody would like to show their condolences, post here and we'll organise it. I'll take on construction again unless someone else would like a turn?
IvySedai (who messaged me to let me know) is happy to co-ordinate so PM's from Donors and Crafters needing a match to her please.
Previous squares were 6", knitted or crocheted. Blues, pinks and purples were the most popular colours. Debbie Bliss Cashmerino or Rowan Cashsoft DK (links are just the first ones I found on google) It's also available in John Lewis.
Lastly, was there anything in particular that Magic liked and could be incorporated in the design?
Can we send money using paypal pidj?
Oops sorry I'll message Ivy
Would you be able to buy a ball of wool or two to send to a crafter? Last time, we had lots of people with money but no ability and lots of people with ability buy no money, and they helped each other out...
sorry, what has happened to magic please?
I don't know, just that she's passed on
I've PM'd the thread link to Ivy so she can give us some accurate information
MissPenteuth is happy for the PayPal to be reopened for this, if people would like to donate money.
Thank you for starting this thread pidj.
I'll go and do one in Arts and Crafts for some woolly types, then we can leave this one open to co-ordinate the whole lot.
Would it be possible to know what happened, please?
Oh god that is so sad....I can knit. I have some wool, merino, not debbie bliss, but works the same. Navy, Lilac, light Blue, bright blue, purple colours...would that be OK. What are the sqaure measurements- cast on no, and then no of rows please. I knit, but not brilliantly.
this is an excerpt from a pm from cerubina about magic8
"All I know is that [DH] came home from work (having only just gone back after holidays) and found her on the sofa. I know that [DD1] was supposed to go to her granny's for a few days this week and I pray that this had already happened but I am not sure. I can't bear to think of her and the twins being there with [Magic8] unconscious and not understanding what was happening, or not knowing what to do to help.
I don't know if you were aware, but she had a pacemaker fitted because her heart did not transmit electrical impulses properly. Her heart rate was very low and this was supposed to correct it. I don't have any information to confirm but I presume that something went wrong here and she would have passed out, hopefully very peacefully and quietly and without realising what was happening. It's just so tragic, especially given what they had been through with Ruby and how delighted she was with the babies. I don't know how the family begin to get over it."
that is all we know at this point
Gapants, I'm afraid it needs to be the same for every square otherwise it won't wash and wear well. We can arrange for some wool to be sent. IIRC (I can't knit, only crochet) it's cast on 33 on 4mm needles?
Oh no, how awful. I didn't ever interact with magic8 but I know how much good she did on the pregnancy boards.
I cannot knit or crochet but my MIL is excellent. I will buy the right wool and ask her to do it on my behalf so please count me in.
Hate seeing these threads pop up. (Not that I hate seeing requests for blankets as that itself is lovely, just hate knowing that someone has gone)
Message withdrawn at poster's request.
Oh god that is terrible, her poor poor family.
Ok about the wool. I will ask my other knitter friends to see if they have any of that wool before I go and buy some.
I can knit and would like to help. Sorry to ask the obvious, but sounds like this is something that has been done before. What happens with the blanket, is it sent to the family? Such a lovely idea.
Thank you Bupcakes. If you'd like to get her to teach you, I'll include it. I can incorporate pretty much anything, and one with dropped stitches from someone who has taught themself is a valuable as a dozen from an expert to a project like this.
Stranded, you can order from the links in the OP or buy in person in John Lewis (and probably some independent wool shops)
You want Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Double Knit or Rowan Cashsoft Double Knit - NOT the baby stuff, it's a different weight.
I don't mean to boss everyone around on wool, it's just that if everyone uses the same type and weight the blanket will wash and last better
Is there a pattern for crochet?
I didn't know Magic8ball but would be happy to crochet some squares. The only problem I have is lack of funds for wool, Will we be having wool doners as we did for Edgars blanket?
peeoffkitty, this is the fourth family this year and the blanket is a present to them from MumsNetters. It means that they're not swamped by lots of individual messages, and people who "knew" the poster can express their condolences.
After a scary experience with ParcelForce losing the blanket in transit (MissPenteuth got it back, don't worry), the previous three were all handed over in person - to Edgar and Rinders at a lunch meetup, and to Blondes by RatherBeOnThePiste who came to the lunch and took the blanket on.
If we need to get one outside the South of England (geography has been on our side) then we'll organise a MN relay across the country
I cannot knit but would happily donate to a wool fund.
Narketta, happy to donate funds but will need to send by post of BACS as I don't have paypal.
Pamplemousserose, granny squares are lovely - I can find you a youtube link or some written instructions? Ravelry is a brilliant resource, especially if you want to try something new...
Yes, Narketta. Hold on and we'll find you someone!
So sad but what a beautiful gift. Mumsnet really is a wonderful place. So its 33 stitches on 4mm doing a square to the tension of the wool. I'll get cracking on that this weekend.
I'd like to help - I've just bought some wool, are there any instructions to get the right size square? I can knit and crochet.
Please may Donors needing Crafters and Crafters needing Donors PM IvySedai (as well as posting here so we can say thank you) so that you can be matched? Thanks
