Male midwife facing 29 charges of misconduct,

NMC hearing started today, expected to last four days, of a senior male midwife accused of, among other things, having taken pictures of two women having caesarian sections without their permission and also filmed himself performing a sex act in a hospital toilet.
He faces 29 misconduct charges.

Will be watching this case this week.

As an aside it says he was one of only 50 male midwives in 2018.
There was another one struck off last year for a stash of 400 indecent images of children.

So that's 2/50

It certainly is Goats.

Personally I would never agree to have a male midwife.

Here is another who was struck off in 2016 for, among other complaints, telling women to give more oral sex to reduce blood pressure.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3541622/Male-midwife-told-female-patients-oral-sex.html

I know that predates the 2018 figure of fifty male midwives, so he wouldn't have been counted in that figure but hey ho, three out of fifty.

What are the odds? Who'd have thought it.

Rightly or wrongly, in my opinion men should not be midwives. Whilst doing my midwifery(didn’t end up completing) degree I worked with a male midwife on postnatal ward, everyone seemed to love him but I found out one night in the early hours he was quite a bully and extremely sharp tongued, I was a first yr student, he’d asked my to do bloods at 4am and given how tired I was (I also had 2young kids myself) I said I wasn’t confident in my ability to do it safely. He got extremely annoyed with me and sent me home.

Women are at their most vulnerable time in their lives whilst giving birth and afterwards and personally I do think it should be a job for women only.

Oh look here’s a different male midwife who was also struck off www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3541622/Male-midwife-told-female-patients-oral-sex.html

So how does it work?
Is it a trainee has to start of in a general discipline and then - I dunno - pass the gynea and obs modules and gets funnelled into this speciality?
Or do you aim for it from the start?
Not sure how it works.

You need to do a three year degree in midwifery.

I'm with you making

To the point I'd rather have had the rude women o did on 1 or 2 occasions than a man no matter how nice he was. Because whether it's intentional or not I feel male gynae staff come with an added requirement ( purely self inflicted but there non the less) of having to make them.feel ok about touching you. They don't ask for it but it's in built isn't it. Don't piss off the men. It's survival.

Its just a job you don't need at that time when you are tired vulnerable and in pain.

Those poor women in these stories Sad

Abusers will go to extraordinary lengths to get themselves into a position where they can access victims and commit abuse. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more incidents with this person that they don’t know about.

I don’t usually click on DM links but I did on this one.

What a fucking arsehole. He’d also “failed to keep newborn babies warm” Sad

Totally agree with PPs - I would have hated to have a male midwife. If my DDs ever give birth, I will be telling them to refuse a male midwife now.

Now I come at this with a slightly different perspective as my ds was delivered by a male paramedic who was really calm, kind and professional for the ridiculously quick delivery. To be Frank I was just glad that my poor neighbour didn't have to catch him, however I really don't think that I would of been comfortable with a male midwife at all I just don't think that any man should be allowed to be midwifes and have always been suspicious of any man who wants to be 1 and guys like this just reinforce that

Report
FannyCann · 25/01/2022 23:02

I feel it's a bit different in the situation of a paramedic. They are just trained to manage a delivery in an emergency, which most often will simply involve caching the baby and keeping it warm and looking after the mother, eg if she bleeds, while getting to hospital asap. Very different to being a midwife and looking after women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

Report
StrawberryLollipops · 25/01/2022 23:02

The paramedic was not going for the job - he just happened to be there.
I sometimes think a random man has more chance of being a decent bloke than someone who has gone for something offbeat. The odds just seem better.

I get the distinct impression this is connected to the phenomenon whereby men are lauded as heroes and thrown parades for performing basic acts of parenting that nobody blinks at when it's a woman doing it.

I see people doing the same with male midwives, where reality does not support the adoration and parades.

I worked with 3 male midwives
2- very woman centred and respectful
1 - not woman centred and rather egotistical, but not abusive

As far as you know. The two struck off for viewing child sex abuse images may have seemed women centred and respectful or may have seemed not abusive up until they were caught

I had a male midwife who was horrid (mid 2000s). My first instinct when I read this was to see if it was him. Shock. I
