FINA are investigating past doping, and it seems there is some suspicion that the GDR was a bit cheaty.

Sharron on BBC News now talking about the forgotten Brits who came in fourth and fifth behind GDR cheats, and about the health effectrs of the doping on those women in later life.

Sharron's father, her coach, would not shut up and was thrown off the national team.

It would be a wonderful gesture, even if years overdue.

And I can’t think of anyone more deserving. Sharron’s great.

Good for Sharron. Heard her today on radio.

Her tweet and if you zoom in you can read the Times article.

I didn't know that her Dad had her silver medal gold plated. I thought that's as so sad and so lovely.

All Sharon's tweets today really struck me. She was cheated out of what she earned and I'm so glad to see this being address.

May have been a bit cheaty Grin

This was their testosterone doping of female athletes wasn't it. Awful thing to do to those women.

And yes those who were given T need to be retroactively disqualified.

Would love Davies to get her medal.

I accosted her once, was slightly flustered but told her how much I appreciate what she was doing for women's sport. I hope she gets the gold.

The athletes who were doped shouldn’t be blamed. It was the coaches and team managers who should have been hung out to dry.

That would be a wonderful outcome.

Agree. I think they didn't know iirc. Either way East Germany arguing / refusing would have been... An extremely bad idea indeed.

Those women have long term impact because of it.

It's the coaches etc and all others involved.

Poor Sharron & other female athletes who lost out. Also poor women from GDR who were doped with testosterone (an early case study showing it has bad long term effects).

All these women lost out

It is much worse for the GDR women. I saw a programme a while back where Sharon met Petra Schneider the woman who beat her. Sharon looked her usual radiant self but Petra looked a wreck. It is worse to be robbed of your health than a gold medal.

I actually thought this I’d been acknowledged years ago. At the time it was pretty obvious to most people that there was ‘something about’ certain athletes - and I was a child back than.

One athlete, track and field I think, suffered such dreadful effects that she had a “sex change” and now lives as a man.

And yet they want to give testosterone to young girls just because they like playing with "boys'" toys or have short hair 🤔

Young girls in the UK lost out. Can you think what a boost it might have given to grassroots sports in the UK if Sharron had gold medalled?

It did harm to coaching for Davies' father to have been sacked for refusing to be silent. The social and cultural harms around this are substantial.

There were far wider and more general harms than those that happened to the individuals and displaced individuals in this frame.

Some of those GDR women possibly also lost out on an opportunity to actually win fair and square too. There could well have been a number of athletes among then who could have won on their genuine merits and that too was taken from them.
