Absolute disgrace. Posters on campus calling for her to be sacked. Academic colleague tweeting that he agrees with this. twitter.com/FrancescoFv37/status/1445727937660076032?t=-Di7mRf5sznFvvzww8UI2w&s=19 I saw a tweet saying there was a burning in effigy. Can't confirm this but nothing would surprise me now. Time for Sussex staff, students and alumni to put their heads over the parapet.

I really don’t know how stock has coped.
Every lecture I attended last year had repeated slurs openly stated by both tutors and students alike against herself and JK.
If I had spoken up or anyone else we would have been run off campus.
I was repeatedly called a terf and I didn’t come out as GC. Just because I disagreed in one way or another. The lecturers regularly used the word terf too.

Snake? What's with the fucking snake?

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. The lack of self awareness has always been nigh on total.

I'm not on Twitter, stuck in the your password is incorrect loop of doom. Can someone do the unroll thing and actually email or post a hard copy to the Dean. I think@UniSussex just goes to the Wokey Blokey who fuel this crap in the first place!

Fuck! Set that alongside a loop of ribbon and ask the SNP what the fuck they are supporting.

That can't stand. US surely has to make some kind of statement. They can't just leave DocStock hanging! They need to make their support of her and the right to freedom of speech, 100% clear.

And those young 'gentlemen' need to be arrested. Incitement etc, all illegal.

It doesn’t feel right to wish a colleague should be fired, but it’s not been right for colleagues working in the same School to be afraid to talk about Stock for fear of litigation.

What is he talking about? He's not afraid to talk about her and say he wants her to be fired. Or is he now terrified because he thinks she's going to sue? (Seems unlikely considering what else gets posted on twitter.)

Shock I'd no idea matters were at that pitch.

An utter disgrace for this person to tweet that. I don’t think his reply’s (he only allowed people who he follows to post) went the way he thought they would.

Dr Stock should get lawyers involved here, he needs to retract the accusation of transphobia or face the consequences.

It's just a modern day witch hunt. Prof Stock is really quite centrist in her views and always polite.

The idea that philosophy shouldn't involve debate or thought experiments is both hilarious and terrifying.

I find this genuinely terrifying.

This is witch-hunting. Harassment, intimidation, terrorism.

How much do such legal actions cost in England?

He’s says he’s a feminist in his bio. Angry

He’s been told he’s a raving misogynist by about 100 people this morning so hope he manages to change his bio accordingly.

Tens of thousands but I for one would be more than happy to do some digging.

Yeah, his bio also has the words "empathy" and "compassion".
Riiiiight.

Was his account always private, or is that a recent thing?

Maybe he’s confused the meaning of feminist with misogynist.

He has just locked down his account - I guess if the atmosphere at Sussex is that bad, he would not be expecting the reaction he got.

I consider someone talking up front a lot about empathy and compassion a huge red flag. The most abusive person I've ever known did so. It's a personality disorder sign. Real compassionate people show, they don't tell.

No, he's made his account private in the last hour or two. There are plenty of screenshots floating about showing his original three tweets and at least one follow up, however. What a prat, to go on the record in this way. Surely this warrants some sort of disciplinary action?

Freedom of thought and freedom of expression are essential in a university, but as with ever other human right there have to be limits so you don't impinge on others' rights. In this instance, his tweets are pouring fuel on the fire started by these students (at least I hope they're students, if other academics have actually been involved in the poster campaign the university is really down the rabbithole). In her place, I would now be genuinely worried for my personal safety. She is a woman and she is a lesbian - two protected characteristics under the Equality Act. Additionally, the University is her employer and has a duty of care towards her. They need to act without further delay to make it abundantly clear that she is not going to be fired and the students concerned will face disciplinary action for bullying and intimidation. I hope they've also given her extra security.

Professor Selina Todd and Professor Rosa Freedman have both had to have extra security following incidents of a similar nature, at Oxford and Reading respectively. It's abhorrent behaviour.

I'd like to see a strong statement from the government on this too. I can't see this losing them votes, quite the contrary.

In a sane world, Professor Stock could turn to UCU, which is presumably her union, but I doubt they will be willing to support her, as they have been as much use as a chocolate fireguard to others in similar positions.

I had the misfortune to belong to UCU for a while when I worked in a university. Useless. Most of the executive members were more interested in boycotting Israel than the bread and butter union work of supporting their members.

I've just read this. Why do I suspect that this will end up silencing GC posters?

Other initiatives being tested by the US company include: a feature that allows users to remove unwanted followers without officially blocking them; and a “safety mode” that blocks accounts for seven days if the tech firm’s systems spot them using harmful language or sending repetitive, uninvited replies and mentions. The safety mode feature is being trialled initially among a small group of users, with a particular emphasis on female journalists and members of marginalised communities.

Not RTFT but that picture is shocking.
Where are the police (domestic terrorism specialists please), the different heads of Sussex University management, universities UK, the minister for higher education, the local MP for the university? This is extremely serious and should be national news as an incident. You can’t go about burning effigies of women for having views. Christ.
Solidarity with Dr Stock. Flowers Obviously. Millions of women agree with her. She’s telling the truth.
